Viva!USA Alerts 9/23/05

Just in: A good day for horses -- on Sept. 20th, the Senate passed the Ensign/Byrd Amendment to end federal taxpayer funding of the slaughter of horses for food! More to do. See: http://www.saplonline.org.

1.  Viva!USA's new fish leaflet now available

2.  Bay Area Vegetarians 4 year anniversary

3.  Sowing Seeds Humane Education Workshop in LA

1.  Viva!USA's new fish leaflet now available
The newest member of Viva!USA's family of literature is now available!  Our new fish leaflet explains why fish deserve compassion, too. Over fishing has caused fish populations to decline rapidly, and is having an impact on the ecology of our oceans. Meanwhile, there are no laws governing fish slaughter, leaving these animals to suffocate slowly, or die while being gutted alive.  Because fish are so different from us, many people forget that they suffer and feel pain like other animals. You can help remind people that fishing is not a just or humane alternative to eating other kinds of meat.

Check it out: http://www.vivausa.org/activistresources/leaflets/index.html

To order our new leaflet, email orders@vivausa.org. Don't forget to include the type and quantity of leaflet you'd like, and to provide a mailing address for your order.

2.  Bay Area Vegetarians 4 year anniversary
Bay Area Vegetarians are celebrating their 4 year anniversary on Saturday October 2nd at 2:00 pm. The celebration includes  a special presentation by Viva!USA's lauren Ornelas in honor of World Farmed Animals Day.  "Campaigning for Farmed Animals: the Whole Story" will cover issues such as investigating, launching, maintaining and winning (!) campaigns for farmed animals. If you live in the San Francisco Area, this is a great opportunity to get in touch with local activists, share delicious food, and learn about successful activism from movement leaders while celebrating the work of BAVeg.

Follow the link for more information and to RSVP (by Sept 28, please):  www.bayareaveg.org/events.htm?EID=892#892

3.  Sowing Seeds Humane Education Workshop in LA
The International Institute for Humane Education offers 2-day training workshops on humane education around the country. These Sowing Seeds workshops are designed for educators, activists, students, and anyone who wants to help turn compassion into action. Topics covered include consumerism and the media, animal protection, environmental preservation, social justice, and the connections between all of these issues.  Register by October 21st to take part in the next Sowing Seeds workshop in Los Angeles the weekend of October 28-30.
