San Francisco | Poverty & HousingPhotos from NOLA Common Ground Clinic (BARHC Report #5)
Most of the first wave of medics from the Bay Area Radical Health Collective have now returned from the Common Ground health clinic in Algiers, New Orleans, with others scheduled to depart soon. Though the situation with Hurricane Rita introduces some uncertainty, Common Ground continues to seek healthcare volunteers. ![]() clinic-lucinda1-sm.jpg The Common Ground clinic saw its busiest day yet on Sunday (Sept 18) as residents began to return to Algiers. The situation on the ground remains fluid, however. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has re-imposed an evacuation order for the city due to the approach of Hurricane Rita, although it seems people will not be required to evacuate from the Algiers neighborhood.
Help is still needed, both for the existing Algiers clinic and for satellite clinics people hope to establish in Ward 9 and surrounding areas, as conditions and staffing permit. Healthcare workers interested in going to New Orleans should check with Common Ground ahead of time to get the latest status of operations and needs. The photos here are from Dixie Block, a BARHC EMT and herbalist who spent the past week in Algiers (see the BARHC web gallery for more photos).
