Also call the Governor and request that the National Guard and anyone checking residences to rescue the animals as they come upon them!!!

Apparently the receptionist remarked that every call is logged and that not many requests have come in for this.

I live in Brisbane,Australia and have just called the number that is listed for the Govenor of Louisiana.I was answered almost immediately,I was told very politely that only one dog was shot etc, etc.I doubt that my phone call will do anything, but I had to register my disgust.Iwas also told that the order had now been given to rescue any found animals, and that it was not just political spin that I was being told.I sincerely hope that is the case.

from bestfriends.org:

"Many of you have posted Lt. Gen Honore’s office phone number and asked your fellow members to call. But the barrage of phone calls is now hampering the general's humanitarian missions, rather than helping. They are getting quite distressed and so we are asking everyone to please stop calling. The message has been received and they are acting on it! "

i would keep attention on the white house and your representatives. also, check http://www.bestfriends.org to keep up to date and for more info.

For those not familiar with the local patois, "coonass" is to "Cajun" what "nigger" is to "African-American."

Guys- I lived in New Orleans, and am close to many from St. Bernard. While I am aware of and salute the efforts of the aniamal rescue organizations, the simple fact is that they apparently aren't getting all the dogs, and there is no animal control to help out. I am from rural Loisiana, where there is no dog catcher for an hour in any direction. I can tell you from experience that abandoned dogs get hungry and go feral in time. They will attack livestock and occasionally people. To prevent that, we would do the same as I understand the sheriff's department- shoot them. We couldn't just adopt every stray dog that showed up.
I don't know if there was no alternative to shooting- I haven't been to St. Bernard, I couldn't get that far east when I went back. back. But I know that there are many reasons the dogs could have been shot other than cruelty. We should perhaps not be quite so quick to judge.
I know that in the chaos following Katrina, people concentrated on helping people. I would have been furious if I was told to stay behind because my seat on a boat was filled by a dog. TO those outraged, your sentiments do you credit, but don't let them cloud your judgement. There is enough to do taking care of the human victims. It's understandable that in a state of disorder the police might wish to prevent feral dog packs from roaming the city.

Also, "coonass" does inded refer to a cajun, but it's not nearly as loaded a term as "nigger".

I just cannot believe the cold hearted people out there. How ___ dangerous could a tiny puppy be. I know for a fact if "THE PERSON" who shot these animals in the school had instead told one of the MANY animal rescue org. onsite in LA. those dogs would be either with thier owners or a loving foster family right now... instead of waiting at the rainbow bridge for their humans to come meet them. I think that this person should be prosecuted to full extent of the law ! It was just plain cruel and do you really want someone like that in a law enforcement job???

Jeff - from my point of view many peoples pets are just as important as any human. If it was the case that the dog population in St. Bernard Parish was uncontrollable, why not choose a more humane approach, than shooting the poor animals, thus putting them through inscrutiating pain. It is sickening to me to think that anyone could do this with a clear conscious, or to justify the manner in which it was done. There is something seriously wrong with anyone who doesn't want to vomit when they see that video, or meerly at the thought of an animal going through something like that.
