Oakland Event on September 10th Will Honor Gulf Coast Families
On Saturday, September 10th from 10 am – 12:30 pm displaced families from the Gulf Coast area who are now in the Bay Area will be speaking at the First Congregational Church in Oakland (2501 Harrison Street). Artists, musicians, activists, and community members will join together to grieve with their
Gulf Coast brothers and sisters, to honor their strength and to celebrate a
resurgence of resistance to U.S. racist policies. There will be music and
speakers, "offering us a time to feel and a place to plan." The event will include New Orleans native poet Mac Dennis, Mike Molina of ROOTS/Community Works, singer Renee Wilson, Van Jones
of Ella Baker Center and others. The event will be sponsored by the First Congregational Church and Ella Baker Center for
Human Rights, and donations given at the door will go to relief efforts. More info
The Ella Baker Center's website includes a page about the Resurrect New Orleans campaign to support Gulf Coast activists. This new network will raise funds to support activism and advocacy in the Gulf Coast region;spread the word locally about the needs and aims of Gulf Coast activists; put pressure on national and local media outlets to continue covering the disaster, the victims and Bush's failures; and pressure Congressional representatives to enact helpful legislation.
