East Bay | Animal LiberationRingling Bros' Circus demo and leafleting in Oakland 8-21-05: the activists
In order to let the public know about the circus' mistreatment of animals, activists working with Citizens For Cruelty-Free Entertainment have leafletted in front of Ringling Bros' Circus every day it has been in the Bay Area thus far. ![]() ring_oak_082105a_41.jpg On this day, the last of the circus' appearance at the Oakland Coliseum, at least 20 activists greeted circus-goers coming and going with informative signs and leaflets. Hundreds of leaflets were passed out, some detailing the mistreatment of circus animals, some suggesting animal-free circus alternatives. Other than the occassional hot-head making a scene in front of his children or aggressive circus security details, most people were receptive and a few noted right away that they would never attend another animal circus once they became aware of the inherent cruelty.
The circus will now go to San Jose and then to San Francisco before departing the Bay Area. Animal activists from all over are encouraged to help keep the heat on Ringling and its parent company, Feld Entertainment, to drop the use of animals in their live shows. Please, help leaflet one or more days listed below while the circus is still in town. Signs and leaflets will be made available by friendly, welcoming organizers. Just show up!
