Gross Misinformation: the media in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict
Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada, 4 July 2005

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict gets a disproportionate share of mainstream western media attention, as compared, say, with conflicts in Africa. Yet the public, particularly in the United States, remains grossly misinformed.

Jeffrey Dvorkin, ombudsman for US National Public Radio (NPR), recently claimed that his network's coverage in 2000-2001 had "a tendency to overreport the impact of the intifada on the Palestinians and underreport the effect on Israelis". In fact, the opposite was true. During a six-month period near the beginning of the intifada, NPR reported on 84 percent of Israeli civilian deaths, a study by the well-respected Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting organization found, while reporting on only 26 percent of Palestinian civilian deaths. This has been a consistent pattern across the media.

At the time, NPR's correspondent in Jerusalem, Linda Gradstein, was accepting unethical cash payments worth thousands of dollars annually from pro-Israeli organizations, a practice that was stopped only after it was revealed by an investigation colleagues and I conducted for The Electronic Intifada website. While NPR allowed Gradstein to keep reporting, it had earlier dismissed another correspondent, claiming that she did not disclose to managers that her husband had been an advisor to the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Dvorkin's revisionism comes as NPR and other media and academic organizations in the United States face intense attack from pro-Israel groups and allies in Congress who view any reporting that does not slavishly toe the Israeli line as being implacably hostile or even anti-Semitic. NPR and its affiliate stations face huge cuts in their government funding, instigated by officials with close ties to the pro-Israel lobby.

Those relying on the mainstream media could be forgiven for believing that Israelis are overwhelmingly the victims of violence, and Palestinians the main perpetrators. News organizations have to be constantly reminded that from the start of the first Palestinian uprising in December 1987, until May 15, 2005, Israelis killed a total of 4,857 Palestinians, the vast majority unarmed civilians, of whom 949 were under the age of 18, according to Israel's B'Tselem human rights group. In the same period, Palestinians killed 1,382 Israelis, of whom 928 were civilians and 131 children. Few recall that the first ever Palestinian suicide bombing targeting civilians in Israel occurred 40 days after settler Baruch Goldstein's 1994 massacre of dozens of Palestinians in Hebron.

In general, the media have responded to Zionist pressure groups by resorting to a fake balance in which the reporter simply recites the claims of "both sides" and makes no attempt to assess independently the evidence supporting one and contradicting the other. So, territories that are occupied under international law become "disputed" and settlements built on expropriated, occupied land become "neighborhoods". The cruel reality of occupation becomes something merely "perceived" by Palestinians.

In terms of political analysis, mainstream media commentary takes its cue from the US government agenda, almost never challenging America's unconditional support for Israel. Following the death of Yasser Arafat, there was much cliched editorializing about a "window of opportunity" for peace. Almost always ignored are any facts that do not fit in with the rosy scenario. PA Labor Minister Ghassan Khatib recently wrote that "while talking about vacating settlements with less than 2,000 housing units in Gaza, Israel has been busy constructing, this year alone, something like 6,400 housing units in illegal settlements in the West Bank." Few people are aware of this because the media follow official spin that Sharon's Gaza plan is significant while his actions in the West Bank are not.

On the Palestinian scene, the questionable election of Mahmoud Abbas--America's favored candidate--by a fraction of the Palestinian people was hailed as a great victory for democracy, while his blatantly undemocratic decision to cancel scheduled legislative elections his Fatah faction might lose to Hamas has been downplayed. And while there is much talk of Palestinian "reform", the media rarely focus on the long-standing and credible allegations of major corruption by key PA figures close to Abbas, some of whom are even hailed as "reformers".

While the media have major shortcomings, there are of course some dedicated and fair journalists whose vital contribution should be recognized. And paradoxically, the PA, which seems to believe international opinion will come to its rescue, has failed to counter Israeli propaganda with a credible communications strategy, largely abandoning the task to ad hoc efforts by Palestinian individuals and private groups. All this points to the vital importance of developing strong, independent Palestinian media tied neither to the PA nor to international donors. The donors' agenda, after all, is to focus on internal Palestinian "reform" and endless, sterile diplomacy in order to avoid the necessary confrontation with Israel without which there can be no progress toward peace.

if you don't believe me just use EI's internal search engine and type in "anti-semitism***" - that's not an issue for the Palestinians!!!!!

Isn't it, as he has claimed, Ali Abunimah? Guess thats another lie.

"electronic intifada is run mainly by jews"

Your point being? People of Jewish heritage are involved in many of the anti-Israel groups and, like Gilad Atzmon and Jeffery Blankfort, involved in rank anti-Semitism. This is nothing new and does not contradict the idea that EI is a Militant Palestinian propaganda tool.

BECKY: When you look at a breakdown in statistics of deaths from the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, the overall death total is only one factor which does not prove who was at fault.

The author claims that 4,857 Palestinians were killed by the Israelis. Yet, this number includes all Palestinians who were engaged in armed attacks when they were killed. It includes the deaths of over 100 suicide bombers who killed both Israelis and Palestinians. All these deaths are counted in the final death total.

When a man beats his wife to death on the West Bank, the next day he claims that an IDF soldier did it. When a kid gets his hand blown off from playing in his dad's bomb factory, the IDF gets the blame. Many Palestinian combatants don't wear uniforms, so they are counted as "innocent civilian deaths" when they were anything but innocent. (see http://www.walidshoebat.com for a first-hand report of blaming Israel for deaths committed by Arabs against Arabs).

Even the Resource Center for Nonviolence here in Santa Cruz launched an national speaking tour with a woman who they claimed was the bereaved sister of a woman "stabbed to death by a Jewish settler." It was a lie. Her sister was stabbed to death by a Palestinian man who confessed to the crime. He said it was a "mistake." He had mistaken her sister for a Jew!! THIS was the type of speaker the RCNV recruits to travel the country to PROVE how violent the Israelis are!!! (google "Nadwa Sarandah" for more info).

While it's hard to prove whether a dead body was an "innocent civilian" or a combatant out of uniform, its easy to tell if the body is male or female.

25% of the Israeli deaths are women. Less than 3% of Palestinian deaths are female. If the IDF were "shooting into residential windows" "firing on children on a rooftop" "picking off children walking to school" or "firing into crowds of demonstrators" as many Indybay posters claim, then why does the IDF kill almost exclusively men?

The answer is, that the IDF does NOT target civilians. The IDF takes great care to not kill civilians. And since Palestinian group leaders recruit boys from age 12 to age 17 to commit acts of violence against the Israelis, the death toll of young people on the Palestinian side is much higher. You will find that the vast majority of the 949 deaths of Palestinians under the age of 18 were male.

just curious

Alison Weir's website does not include any statistics for the deaths of women. Why not?

Because they would prove the Palestinians are targeting civilians and the Israelis are not.

Nor do her stats break down how many Palestinian deaths were caused by Palestinians involved in armed attacks. For instance, where is the separate list of the 115 suicide bombers who died during attacks against Israelis??

Why hasn't she listed this?

She would rather you look at the overall death toll and falsely conclude that the Israelis must be the aggressors since so many more Palestinians have died.

This poorly researched website has as its main focus a page of misleading statistics. For example, although they compare the raw numbers f Israeli children versus Palestinian children killed in the current war, they fail to mention that the vast majority of the Palestinian child casualties are male teenage combatants. The real issue is the Palestinian use of child soldiers.
assistance given to Israel and Palestinians.

It is telling that despite horrific crimes against humanity there is not a single UN Resolution condemning attacks on Jewish civilians. At the same time, the most ludicrous of anti-Israel resolutions pass with a huge majority. Its because of the dominance of Arab and Moslem members of the UN and their oil bribed allies.

Palestinians receive more aid per capita than any other group in the world. They have their very own UN agency UNRWA to supply their needs. They also receive aid from Japan, the Eu and the Arab states. Aid-wise, residents of the West Bank and Gaza have hardly been neglected until now. They receive about $300 per person, making them, per capita, the world's greatest beneficiaries of foreign aid. Strangely, their efforts to destroy Israel have not inspired efforts to crush this hideous ambition but rather to subsidize it. Money being fungible, foreign aid effectively funds the Palestinian Arabs' propaganda machine, their arsenal, their army, and their suicide bombers. Consider that after Oslo, USAID tackled the housing problem in Gaza by building 192 apartments at a cost of $35,000-$42,000 each, in a place where per capita income was around $1,200 a year. Guess who got the apartments: politically well-connected families, some of whom occupied multiple units without paying. What's more, wasted money can often beget additional wasted money. For instance, after the EU built a beautiful hospital in Gaza, the EU auditor's report noted, "The cost of maintaining and using this hospital will be well over the financial means of this country." So the hospital stayed shut. But meanwhile, the P.A. had to pay to truck in sewage to the empty facility to prevent a breakdown of its otherwise idle waste-processing equipment. When Jimmy Carter brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt, he promised that both Israel and Egypt receive substantial aid from the US. Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt, more territory that it retained. This web site apparently either doesn’t know that or has chosen to mislead its readership and to conceal that fact.

Israeli holds Palestinians who have committed crimes rather than“political prisoners”. On the other hand, the Palestinians simply shoot any Israelis who happen to come into custody.

Israeli law, derivative of applicable British and Turkish law authorizes home demolitions. Rather than demolish homes, Palestinians slaughter civilians in discos and pizzerias.

The respective unemployment rates changed when the Palestinians decided to trash their economy by starting the current war. Before that they employment rates were much better.

Palestinians and other Arabs stole as much Jewish land as they could in 1948, much of it was only returned by force in 1967 land. Palestinians aren’t taking Israeli land at the moment, but its not for lack of trying.

Finally, this site is replete with poor history of the Middle East and of the conflict. Its rather obvious that the author’s understanding of history began with Oslo.

The “al-Aqsa Intifada” – An Engineered Tragedy
Summary of Findings

Don Radlauer
ICT Associate

An ongoing study by the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya provides an in-depth look at the fatalities on both sides of the current Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Based on thorough research using Palestinian and Israeli open sources, the study provides a breakdown of those killed by age, gender, and combatant status. The results lead to some surprising conclusions.

Combatants, Noncombatants, and Responsibility

Almost 1900 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the “al-Aqsa Intifada”, compared to almost 700 Israelis. Numbers like these are used to create an image of lopsided slaughter, with Israel cast as the villain. But such numbers distort the true picture: They lump combatants in with noncombatants, suicide bombers with innocent civilians, and report Palestinian “collaborators” murdered by their own compatriots as if they had been killed by Israel.
More meaningful figures show that Israel is responsible for some 733 Palestinian noncombatant deaths, while Palestinians have killed 546 Israeli noncombatants. Over 54 percent of the Palestinians killed were actively involved in fighting – and this does not include stone-throwers or “unknowns”. And Palestinians are directly responsible for the deaths of at least 253 of their own number – more than one out of every eight Palestinians killed.

On the Israeli side, 80 percent of those killed have been noncombatants. While Israelis account for about 27 percent of the total “Intifada” fatalities, they represent over 43 percent of the noncombatant victims.

Breakdown by Gender

Women and girls account for 31 percent of all Israelis killed in the conflict, and almost 40 percent of the Israeli noncombatants killed by Palestinians.

Palestinian fatalities, in contrast, have been consistently and overwhelmingly (over 95 percent) male; even when combatants (almost all of whom have been male) are removed from consideration, just 8 percent of Palestinians killed by Israel have been female.

In absolute terms, even though more Palestinians than Israelis have been killed overall, Israeli female fatalities have far outnumbered Palestinian female fatalities. If we include all reliable reports of women and girls killed in the conflict, the ratio is 219 Israeli females compared to 92 Palestinian females – a ratio of almost 2.5 to 1. If we restrict the comparison to noncombatant Israeli females killed by Palestinians and noncombatant Palestinian females killed by Israel, the difference is even more dramatic: 69 Palestinians compared to 214 Israelis, a ratio of three to one.

Breakdown by Age

Israeli combatant fatalities are concentrated in a narrow age range, as we would expect for soldiers in a uniformed army. Israeli noncombatants, in contrast, display a near-random age distribution. This is equally unsurprising, given that these fatalities are the result of terrorist attacks on accessible civilian targets.

Palestinian fatalities present a quite different picture. Palestinian combatant fatalities, like those on the Israeli side, are concentrated in a narrow age range – although this concentration is slightly less pronounced. (This is unsurprising, given that Palestinian combatants are mostly members of unofficial terrorist/guerilla organizations.) Palestinian noncombatant fatalities, however, show an age distribution completely unlike that on the Israeli side. Instead of a “sloppy” distribution over a broad range of ages, Palestinian noncombatant fatalities are heavily concentrated among teenagers and young adults.

“Mature” and Young Fatalities

A more specific focus on older and younger victims of the conflict further highlights the difference between Palestinian and Israeli noncombatant fatalities. When we compare the “mature” noncombatant Israelis killed by Palestinians to the “mature” Palestinian noncombatants killed by Israel, we see that the Israeli death toll far exceeds the Palestinian. In fact, Palestinians have killed at least 174 noncombatant Israelis aged 45 and over, while Israelis have killed 65 Palestinian noncombatants in the same age bracket. The ratio is 2.7 to 1.

When we look at children and teenaged noncombatants killed in the conflict, we see a rather strange pattern. Among both Palestinians and Israelis, the number of young children (under the age of ten years old) is comparatively small (although more young Israeli children were killed as a proportion of total fatalities). The number of Palestinian children killed begins to increase at about 10 years of age, and jumps up dramatically between the ages of 12 and 13. However, the increase consists entirely of boys – the number of Palestinian girls killed shows no age-trend, and is very low for all ages.

Young Israelis killed by Palestinians show a different profile: Both boys and girls show an increase starting at age 14 (perhaps a year earlier for boys), and just as many teenaged girls were killed as teenaged boys.

Another Look at Age and Gender

It is worth taking another look at the relationship between age and gender among the noncombatant victims of the conflict. If we look at Palestinian noncombatants killed by Israel, we see that the few female fatalities appear to be randomly distributed by age. The male fatalities, on the other hand, are overwhelmingly young (although, as noted above, relatively few are below the age of ten). To be more precise, at least 60 percent of all Palestinian noncombatants killed by Israel were boys and men between the ages of 12 and 29.

Israeli noncombatants killed by Palestinians show a much closer balance between the sexes – as mentioned above, three out of eight were women and girls. In fact, slightly more girls than boys were killed below the age of 20; and the ratio is about one-to-one for those aged 60 and over.

In contrast to the high percentage of male Palestinian noncombatants between 12 and 29 years of age, only 26 percent of Israeli noncombatants killed by Palestinians were males from 12 to 29 years old.

The Significance of the Statistical Patterns

The statistics show that Israeli noncombatants over the last 23 months have been killed essentially at random, as Palestinian terrorists have chosen to attack whichever civilian targets were accessible. Palestinian fatalities, however, have been strongly concentrated within a particular population segment – teenaged boys and young men.

Population segments like women or older people are not military targets; thus their higher prevalence among Israeli fatalities is an indication of the degree to which Palestinian terrorists have killed Israelis simply for the “crime” of being Israeli.

In contrast, Palestinian noncombatant fatalities have been overwhelmingly young (but over the age of 11) and male. This pattern of Palestinian deaths completely contradicts accusations that Israel has “indiscriminately targeted women and children.” It is clear that the vast majority of the Palestinians killed did not die as the result of random Israeli attacks on inhabited areas, or on mixed-sex crowds at roadblocks and the like. There appears to be only one reasonable explanation of this pattern: that Palestinian men and boys engaged in behavior that brought them into conflict with Israeli armed forces. Certainly, at least after the first few days of the conflict, these Palestinian men and boys (or, in the case of the younger ones, their parents and teachers) have to have been aware that they were placing themselves in harm’s way.

In fact, the highly specific pattern of Palestinian noncombatant fatalities suggests that many of these deaths have resulted from an active Palestinian indoctrination campaign glorifying “martyrdom” – effectively encouraging boys and young men to confront Israeli forces and risk death even when there was no real likelihood of causing material harm to Israelis.
