Fox whore John Gibson on London attacks: "blow up Paris, and who cares?"

by PHX
On the day that London was selected to host the 2012 Olympics, Fox commentator John Gibson responded on "The Radio Factor" by boldly saying that Paris should have gotten the bid because "it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn't worry about terrorism. They'd blow up Paris, and who cares?" The next day, when London was attacked, Gibson reaffirmed this atrocious claim in his Fox column, "My Word," saying "This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics -- let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while."

John Gibson's recent column wishing Paris were the site of the 2012 Olympics because it would be a "treat" to watch France deal with terrorism was not his only venture into xenophobia. The host of Fox News Channel's "The Big Story" lays out his fear and loathing of most of the world in his book Hating America: The New World Sport.

After wishing a terrorist attack on another European city just yesterday, you might think John Gibson would apologize Thursday (July 7, 2005) when terrorists did strike in London. That would have been the right thing to do.

From the July 6 broadcast of Westwood One’s The Radio Factor with Bill O’Reilly, guest-hosted by Gibson:

GIBSON: By the way, just wanted to tell you people, we missed -- the International Olympic Committee missed a golden opportunity today. If they had picked France, if they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn’t worry about terrorism. They’d blow up Paris, and who cares?

From the "My Word" segment of the July 7 edition of Fox News’ The Big Story with John Gibson:

GIBSON: The bombings in London: This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics -- let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while.

Brits are angry at Fox News for what they consider to be callous and self-serving remarks by its on-air (Brit Hume and Brian Kilmeade particular) personalities concerning the London bombings. John Gibson, a Fox News personality, said this: "If they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn't worry about terrorism. They'd blow up Paris, and who cares? This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics - let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while." Of course, he said this BEFORE the bombings took place, but regardless, tragic incidents such as this requires one to be a bit more tactful. It wouldn't hurt Fox News to apologize, and not because they're right or wrong, but because people are hurting and it's the classy thing to do.

The London terror bombings have brought the evil out of the hearts and minds of the faces of America’s most successful cable news channel. In this age of global terror, where the media has an even greater responsibility to calm and inform the public in the face of growing fear, Fox News is instead acting to inflame the anger and confusion of their audience while allowing inflammatory statements—from their own hosts and anchors—that border on dangerous.

Brian Kilmeade, outspoken conservative and host of Fox & Friends, started the cacophony of egregiousness by belaboring the top-level ranking of global warming and African aid on the G8 agenda. The London attacks were “the first time since 9-11 when they should know, and they do know now, that terrorism should be Number 1,” Kilmeade suggested. “But it's important for them all to be together. I think that works to our advantage, in the Western world's advantage, for people to experience something like this together, just 500 miles from where the attacks have happened.”

In other words, the terror attacks were good for the Western World. Looking for the positives in a disaster is a regular occurrence for journalists exploring the bigger picture. But Kilmeade used the attacks to provide support for his own agenda—that the G8 was too worried about Africa and global warming, issues far from the top on the American Right's agenda. To suggest that terror attacks on London were a good thing because they remind people about terrorism is an incredibly political and rather devious suggestion.
