Join writer/illustrator Jaime Cortez and our Sexile heroine, AIDS activist and performer Adela Vazquez in a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a graphic novel. Sexile is the story of a transgender's journey from Cuba in the early 1980's, the first years of the AIDS epidemic and his gender transition. Sexile is published by the Institute for Gay Men's Health, a partnership between New York City's Gay Men's Crisis and AIDS Project Los Angeles created to address the most critical health issue in the lives of gay men, HIV/AIDS, and to promote gay men's overall health and wellness. Friday, June 10, 8-10 p.m.: A Nation of Want: Readings by Ricardo Bracho and CherrÌe Moraga unites two prolific literary talents, presenting texts from their plays, poetry, prose and essays in their own voices. This historic reading is first time in many years that Ricardo and CherrÌe have read together in San Francisco. Mr. Bracho is a Visiting Scholar-Artist at the Center for Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara. He has been a participant in the NEA/TCG Residency Program for Playwrights and Mabou Mines Suite Residency Program, is a recipient of two commissions from the Latino Theater Initiative of the Mark Taper Forum and the Creative Work Fund. His plays include The Sweetest Hangover, Fed Up, A to B, Sissy, Querido and Mexican Psychotic.
Ms. Moraga is co-editor of This Bridge Called My Back, author of "Shadow of a Man" and "Watsonville," and "Heroes and Saints." Ms. Moraga! is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts' Theatre Playwrights' Fellowship and has been the Artist-in-Residence at Stanford University since 1996. She is presently working on a novel (untitled) and a new play entitled "The Mathematics of Love."
