About 4,000 demonstrators marched towards the Chilean National Congress in Valparaiso on Saturday, in a challenge to the annual speech to the nation by President Ricardo Lagos.
Towards the end of the demonstration, demonstrators raised barricades in the streets and threw firebombs at police vehicles. Police responded with water cannons and more than 50 arrests were carried out.
Many of the demonstrators were striking students who have been fighting against the privatization of the education system for months.
