CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Livermore Adopts Policy to Protect Circus Animals

After the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) booked Circus Gatti into a local park facility the past 2 years, East Bay Animal Advocates brought the Gatti history of USDA violations and the larger issue of widespread exotic animal abuse to the attention of the park district. At the April 27 Board Meeting, the LARPD unanimously adopted a policy for LARPD events with circus animals. While not the outright ban on exotic animal acts, the subsequent policy will expectantly have the same effect:

"LARPD will review each application for an event where exotic animals are present, and determine if the operator has shown humane treatment of the exotic animals. Applicants must meet all requirements of the California Fish & Wildlife Service and the USDA, as well as local laws and ordinances. Staff will also ensure that educational animal programs fit within the scope of acceptable activities conducted by the LARPD."
