California Bills Regarding Animals

by In Defense of Animals
1. Help Expand the Humane Slaughter Act to Include Birds

Sometime next month, the Senate Agricultural Committee will review a bill that would expand the Humane Slaughter Act to cover spent egg laying hens and other small game birds. The Humane Slaughter Act requires that animals used for food be rendered unconscious before being killed. Currently, all poultry and other birds are exempt from federal humane laws that cover farmed animals. S.B. 662 gives Californians an opportunity to tell lawmakers that all birds used by the agriculture industry need legal protections that enforce basic humane standards.

2. Help Ban Cosmetic Dog Ear Cropping

California Assembly Member Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) is sponsoring A.B. 418, a bill that would ban the cropping of a dog's ears in the state of California except when done for therapeutic purposes. The bill includes a clause allowing dogs with cropped ears to still be entered in dog shows in the state.
While ear cropping is already banned in more than twenty countries, California will be the first place in the U.S. to ban the practice if A.B. 418 passes. Please click here

3. Protect Ban on Kangaroo Products

Assemblywoman Nicole Parra has taken on the charge to help Adidas continue killing kangaroos to make soccer cleats. Over the past two years, several bills have been introduced to remove protections for these unique animals. The current bill, AB 734, seeks to lift the current ban on the importation and sale of any body part from a kangaroo species not listed as endangered.
