ACORN-Tenants’ Union Action Alert

Members of ACORN’s newest chapter, the Fruitvale Tenants’ Union, just
came off of an exciting drive that achieved several key repairs to
Apartment Buildings throughout January and February.

Tenant Union members have won a series of key repairs and
improvements to dilapidated buildings throughout the Fruitvale
District including the following:

• Member Mirian Ramos and 15 other Tenants and ACORN members held a
meeting with a landlord in a 23 unit building in the Fruitvale
District. The meeting resulted in the replacement of mold-ridden
carpets throughout the hallways, new sinks for many tenants in the
building and new working washer and dryer machines. These repairs had
gone ignored before our Tenants began organizing in that building
• After a delegation of Tenant Members delivered demands to a
Fruitvale Landlord about broken heaters, mold and many, many other
health code violations, members received repairs the next day.
Tenants in the complex were given new heaters, professional carpet
cleaners, and a thorough extermination of mice and cockroaches.
• The drive finished with a 50 person meeting in the Neighborhood led
by Tenant Members that cited access to code enforcement as the
biggest concern facing Tenants throughout the Fruitvale Neighborhood.

In one instance a code enforcement official was even quoted as saying
to a landlord that he better make repairs because one of our members
“was an ACORN member” and if failed he would receive high fines or
worse.

Oakland Tenants Demand Healthy Homes

How you can get involved:

This Friday, March 18th members of ACORN’s Tenant Union will be going
down to the City of Oakland’s Code Enforcement Department to speak
out on the continual lack of translation at the Code Enforcement that
is leading to mass health problems in buildings throughout the City.

Tenants have had to endure a series of sub par housing conditions at
the hands of a few absentee landlords including rodent and cockroach
infestation, mildew and mold that could lead to high rates of asthma
amongst children and at times inadequate heating.

Housing rights are human rights, so we are inviting everyone to join
us in front of 1515 Clay St. at 3pm, and anyone who would like to is
invited to stay and join ACORN members at 4pm as they demand that
State Senator Don Perata and the Governor Defend Prop 98 funding!
