Anticipating a vacancy on the Supreme Court, right-wing lawmakers
around the country are busy preparing for George Bush's nominees to
eliminate a woman's right to choose. Using state legislatures like
Petri dishes, anti-choice lawmakers and governors are passing
unconstitutional laws they hope will test - and overturn - Roe v. Wade
in the Supreme Court. And as they do, anti-choice U.S. senators are
working to grease the skids for Bush's out-of-touch nominees -
threatening to change the rules so they can force anti-choice judges
through on narrow party-line votes.

Anti-choice strategy: from the statehouse to the court house

South Dakota's anti-choice legislature has teed up two new egregious
bills designed to restrict the right to choose and undermine Roe v.
Wade. House Bill 1249 would immediately ban abortion - at all stages,
with no exception for health, rape, incest, or fetal anomaly - if Roe
v. Wade is overturned. House Bill 1166 would force doctors to provide
biased and false information to women seeking abortion, including that
abortion may cause depression, increased risk of suicide, or even
death. The governor is expected to sign these bills any day.

Michigan is another hotbed for anti-choice strategists. In 2004,
Michigan enacted the most extreme restriction on the right to choose
of any state in more than a decade, banning abortion throughout all
stages of pregnancy without an adequate exception to protect women's
health and without any exception for rape or incest. Reproductive
rights organizations filed suit on March 1 to prevent the law from
taking effect later this month.

What you can do: contact your senators today!

We cannot let President Bush force through anti-choice judicial
nominees who will decide cases about laws like these. If Bush
successfully appoints even one anti-choice Supreme Court justice, Roe
v. Wade will be in dire jeopardy.

Meanwhile, in Washington, DC, Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) is
hard at work rewriting Senate rules to take away the Senate's
constitutional right to review and oppose judicial nominees. If he
gets enough votes, Senate Democrats will have virtually no chance to
block President Bush's ideologically extreme nominees.

Call on your senators to stop Sen. Frist's campaign to go "nuclear"
and erode 200-year old Senate rules! Click here to take action today -

Your Senators

----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I am writing to ask you to oppose any changes to Senate rules to
prevent the filibuster of judicial nominees.

It's critical that the Senate independently review each judicial
nominee and take into account each nominee's record, ideological
views, and knowledge of the law. Short-cutting Senate debate on
lifetime appointments to the federal court is inappropriate and dangerous.
