Dear friend,

This week is a big week for Books Not Bars and the Ella Baker Center. It's our
first week in our beautiful new offices in Oakland, CA.

For years, the Ella Baker Center has been headquartered in San Francisco, with a
second office in West Oakland. We are very proud of what we have accomplished since
we got started in 1996, especially in incubating and developing projects like Bay
Area PoliceWatch, TransAction, FIERCE, INSWatch, Let's Get Free and, of course,
Books Not Bars.

2004-2005 marks a new chapter for us. Books Not Bars and its youth project, Let's
Get Free, are tackling juvenile justice reform locally and statewide. Reclaim The
Future (our new "Green Jobs Not Jails" initiative) is also growing. To be effective,
the Ella Baker Center needed to consolidate into a single, large location with room
to expand.

Well, we found the perfect space in Oakland, where the weather is warmer and the
rent is much more affordable.

We're now on 40th Street and Broadway in North Oakland. We're close to public
transportation (like BART and AC Transit) and only 15 minutes from downtown San
Francisco. We've got a spacious, welcoming building all to ourselves and we're
loving it.

Last — but DEFINITELY not least — we will have an office warming party very soon.
We can't wait to show everyone our new home and celebrate. (We just have to get
settled in first.)

Many thanks,
Staff of Books Not Bars and the Ella Baker Center
