Insurgents fired 10 mortar rounds at the governor's office and set ablaze a fuel tanker parked nearby, an unnamed US military spokeswoman said.

Governor Duraid Kashmoula, whose predecessor was assassinated in July, was unhurt.

Rebels also fired six mortar rounds at a US military base in Mosul, but there were no injuries.

Violence flared in the city after a US-led offensive to recapture the city of Fallujah, 50 kilometres west of Baghdad, from rebels began 10 days ago.

Insurgents captured several Mosul police stations last week and took control of streets in parts of the city.

US warplanes carried out air strikes and Iraqi national guards were called in to reinforce police units to restore order.

Meanwhile, at least seven Iraqis were killed in three separate bomb blasts in the capital Baghdad, the major oil refinery city of Baiji and the oil producing city of Kirkuk in the north.

US troops also clashed with heavily armed guerrillas in the western city of Ramadi, residents said.
