by xinhuanet and others
FALLUJAH, Iraq, Nov. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Mosques in Iraq's restive city of Fallujah announced on Monday that the fighters inside the city have captured 35 US soldiers.

Loud speakers of the mosques blared out the news as US forces were trying to penetrate the rebel-held city, but the news could not be independently confirmed.

US troops and Iraqi special forces stormed into the western districts of Fallujah early Monday and seized the main city hospital and two key bridges over the Euphrates River.

US officials said there may be more fierce fighting to come if US forces try to enter downtown Fallujah on the east bank of the river.

[World News]: Falluja (Iraq), Nov 8 : Mosques in Iraq's restive city of Falluja announced Monday that rebel fighters inside the city have captured 35 US soldiers, reports Xinhua.

Loudspeakers at the mosques blared out the news as US forces were trying to penetrate the rebel-held city,

The news however could not be independently confirmed.

US troops and Iraqi special forces stormed into the western districts of Falluja early Monday and seized the main city hospital and two key bridges over the Euphrates River.

US officials said there may be more fierce fighting to come if US forces try to enter downtown Falluja on the east bank of the river.

An AC-130 gunship pounded the city as explosions from US artillery illuminated the night sky.

The initial attacks on Falluja began just hours after the Iraqi government announced a 60-day state of emergency throughout most of the country as militants dramatically escalated attacks, killing at least 30 people including two Americans.

Two US soldiers and one Iraqi were killed and six others wounded in three separate car bombings in Baghdad on Sunday, said the US military.

Another car bomb detonated near the Baghdad residence of Iraqi Finance Minister Adel Abdul-Mehdi, killing one of his bodyguards and injuring six neighbours. The minister was not at home at the time of the explosion.

Meanwhile, in Baghdad, 25 militants were killed when Iraqi police raided a checkpoint south of the city, police said.

Dozens of Iraqi police officers from the city of Hillah, dressed in civilian clothing, attacked the militants' checkpoint in the Latifiyah area early on Sunday, police said.

A fierce battle broke out and lasted for several hours, killing 25 insurgents, they said.
