$8 million in tax measures trail in early count

Early returns Tuesday showed Berkeley voters rejecting most of the $8
million in tax measures that city officials said were needed to close the
city's budget shortfall.

-- Measure S, to form a citizen tree board to monitor maintenance
and the cutting of trees on public land,
was losing 9,579 to 2,874.


-- Measure R, to allow medical marijuana clubs to locate in retail areas
without a public hearing
and allow patients as much marijuana
as they need for medical purposes,
was losing 6,813 to 5,858.


-- Measure Q, an advisory measure to downgrade local
enforcement of prostitution laws,
also was being defeated 8,403 votes to 4,312 votes.
