Why I am voting yes on 70

by Tmiwok
Why I am voting Yes on 70
I am a Miwok Indian (Yosemite means grizzly bear in our language, well in at least one of the 8 or more dialects). I am voting no on 68 and yes on 70. I think this is how most tribal people will vote in this state.
First off, Casinos are not a form of reparations. Casinos are a result of tribal sovereignty. Its the one thing we got in this whole big fucking land deal. Actually most Ca tribes didn't even get this untill recently. You see back when most of the tribes here signed onto 18 treaties with US government in 1848 I believe, California lobbied congress not to ratify the treaties. They didn't, and no one bothered to twell the ndns, so for years there was an untrue assumption of sovereignty on our part. Pretty fucked up huh? This has been corrected throughout the 20th century through acts of congresss mostly. Some tribes are still awaiting sovereignty.
OK, first off, how is 25 percent a fair share? Sure some casinos are raking it in, but so is Wal Mart. We don't tax this non indian owned business 25 percent. It pays the corporate tax rate. To suggest that NDNs should pay 16.2 percent more in taxes than non-ndn businesses is racist, plain and simple. As far as I'm concerned, Arnold is totally racist and has used scapgoating to further his political cause. And I'm sorry, if you want to deal with traffic and crime and the destruction of rural communities, deal with urban sprawl. Deal with the high rents in the bay area and LA area that cause people to commute from all over the state. To suggest that this is all the NDNs fault, as some people are suggesting, is just ridiculous.
OK prop 68. Vote for it if you want casinos in your cities because thats what you're going to get. There is no way in hell that all the gaming tribes are going to sign onto this if it happens (which it has very little chance of). Number one the measure calls for too many infringments on tribal sovereignty, most tribes simply won't allqw it, and thwey don't have to. This prop does not force tribes to do anything. Second, some tribes are making a lot more money than others. 25% is a lot different for say the thunder valley casino(near sacramento) than it is say for the feather falls casino(in the mountains). Besides the sovereignty issues many tribes wont go for 25%, period. This measure, if passed, will result in non-NDN gaming facilitys at urban race tracks and card rooms, period. Most of the tribes, if any, will pay no more than they are now, period.
OK, here is the thing I really like about prop 70. It takes all the power over NDN people out of a racists hands. If prop 70 passes Arnold looses. Arnold is no longer able to play his little power trip. I know prop 70 isn't doing great, but I still have hope. Do any of you realize how this whole backlash in the last year has made me feel. I mean here comes this guy from Austria who probably has little knowledge of history concerning this state telling us that we need to pay our fare share, and that "fair share" is 16.2 percent more than non_NDN bussinesses. What the fuck?!? I wonder how much the land and resources that have built this major world economy in California can be valued at collectively over the years. What of the hundreds of thousands that were killed, 95% of our population. Has that score been settled in a few years of gaming for some tribes? Can it ever be?
If passed 70 will allow tribes to sign onto the corporate tax rate which is currently 8.8 percent. In exchange we can oporate more than 2000 machines on our tribal lands. This is the key, this is the bargaining tool. The magic number is 2000. Those tribes that have signed on with arnold get to go pass that number for 25 percent. This gives them a bit of an advantage over the tribes that will never sell their sovereignty in ordwer to pass the magic 2000 number. And notice only a few tribes have signed on. Compare the idea of few tribes paying 25 percent to dozens upon dozens, maybe all of them paying 8.8 percent. Just from common since I would think the second senario will result in more money for Ca and for the tribes. I honestly believe prop 70 is a win-win situation for CA and the tribes and sweetest of all, a big political blow to arnold. People are confused about these propositions, and several of my freinds have called me to ask about them, after similar explanations to the ones I have given here, this is what I tell them: Vote no on 68 and Please vote yes on prop 70 and encourage others that you know that are qeustioning these props and maybe want to know whats best for the NDNs as well as other Californians, to do the same.
By the way, The Peace and Freedom party has recomended Yes on 70.
