Speak Out at Oakland Police Headquarters Against Misleading November Ballot Initiative – Measure Y



WHAT: Speak Out at Oakland Police Headquarters

WHO: Marylon Boyd, mother of Cammerin Boyd who suffered police brutality in Oakland,

including being beaten by police on May 2, 2004 just three days before he was killed by

police in San Francisco on May 5, 2004.

Jack Heyman, Business Agent, ILWU Local 10, was arrested by the Oakland Police while telling ILWU workers to leave the area because police were shooting workers and peaceful protestors with “non-lethal projectiles” at an anti-war rally at the Oakland Port.

Venus Nobel. A community activist, social worker, mother, and teacher of African-American studies. Her 17-yar-old son Elliott Noble was brutalized by the OPD for exercising his right to observe police misconduct. (we're waiting on her confirmation)

Oakland, CA – Oakland community members and advocates will speak out in front of the Oakland Police Headquarters on Monday, October 25 at 10:30AM against police brutality, and measure Y, the November ballot initiative in Oakland that puts funding police ahead of funding programs.



The “No on Measure Y” campaign, headed by the Education Not Incarceration (ENI) Coalition, along with Oakland local groups and concerned community members, such as Councilwoman Desley Brooks, the Oakland Education Association, ILWU 10 and SEIU 616, is currently mobilizing to defeat Measure Y, a November ballot initiative that will direct 60% of newly raised taxes to hire more police officers in Oakland.



“Increasing police presence within our city will not curb violence nor make anyone safer,” said Aaron Shurman, local Oakland Organizer and a member of the Education Not Incarceration.



“True violence prevention begins by investing in the people of our communities,” said former Councilmember Wilson Riles Jr. “We know that what builds strong, safe communities are the investments we make in education and other basic social services,” he added.
