LGBT's and Allies Urged to Not Spend or Work for a Day
A Boycott for Equality was called for October 8th. Organizer Dale Duncan said that the boycott had four elements: withdraw from work, withdraw $80 from your bank account at an ATM, withdraw from commerce, and withdraw from cell phone communication. The $80 withdrawal on Friday would symbolize an average daily contribution of gay people to the economy. On Saturday, October 9, boycott organizers said, either redeposit the money into your account, or spend it at a local GLBT friendly business. There has been criticism of the boycott from a variety of positions: store owners don't want to close shop and lose profits; some view a one-day boycott as impractical. Still others point out that the boycott does not address or criticize queer people's participation in unsustainable consumerist lifestyles.
