Jan Svankmajer's FAUST and situationist CAN DIALECTICS BREAK BRICKS? screening

by mogel (mogel [at] rotten.com)
SPAZ MOVIE NIGHT : This Sunday, September 19th, at 8PM.

Double Feature and puppet show!

8PM : Dylan McPuke offers up puppet show insanity!

8:30PM : classic Czech animator Jan Svankmajer's FAUST

An free adaptation of Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus', Goethe's 'Faust'
and various other treatments of the old legend of the man who
sold his soul to the devil. Svankmajer's Faust is a nondescript
man who, after being lured by a strange map into a sinister
puppet theatre, finds himself immersed in an indescribably weird
version of the play, blending live actors, clay model animation
and giant puppets.

10:00PM : situationist film, CAN DIALECTICS BREAK BRICKS?

Woody Allen's What's Up Tiger Lily? isn't the only film which
replaces all its original dialogue. Made in 1973, one year after
the dissolution of the Siltuationist International, Rene Vienet's
refashioning of a Chinese martial arts film is heir to a body of
nearly twenty years of theoretical reflection and practice by the
S.I. It is both an extrardinary realization of a radical subjectivity
by Cienet and a prime model of the Situationist tactic of
detourment in the cinema." (Keith Sanborn)
