SMACK DAB, etc.

by Save Freedom @ yahoogroups .com (sfBarea [at] yahoogroups.com)
"Smack Dab" sparkled at Magnet, 7/21. You may shine at the Center, 8/13. MagnetSF.org seeks volunteer nude male photo-models. Kwyr things 4 U 2 do.

SMACK DAB, open mike in the Castro,
hosted by Kirk Read and Larry-bob Roberts, 21 July 2004,
at Magnet, 4122 -- 18th St.: notes in lieu of review:

This place looks like a coffeehouse in a space station. One wall is silvery metal, on which movable magnetic letters express ever-changing senses and nonsenses. If I hadn't been told that Magnet is a health center, I wouldn't have guessed. Hollow transparent stools prompt my butch neighbor to quip, "One man's seat is another man's buttplug."

Before we start, a Magnet organizer asks for male exhibitionists to pose nude for their website
[ http://magnetsf.org ].

Kirk eulogizes Christopher Hewitt, a tiny disabled gay Brit writer, often seen motoring along SF sidewalks in his wheelchair, flying the Union Jack. Sic transit Britannia.

First act: brief dances by a Nam-era soldier, smartly uniformed in camo, starting very martial and uptight. ("Military dance is to military music, as human dance is to human music?" ) Pause/freeze. Music shifts to Hindu chant, soldier drops gun. Pause/freeze. Aquarian music loosens solder up. Each new phase mellows him more, tho he remains fully clothed. Stunning. (As we applaud loudly, I panic, thinking "This is an open mike? I'd hate to follow this act!" ) Next, various readings.

By now, the place is overfull, and surplus civilians lurk outside, peering thru the plate glass, waiting for a vacant seat.
Magnet should install a loudspeaker for the sidewalk set, IMQO (in my queer opinion).

Writer/activist Tommi Avicolli Mecca performs an excellent skit about high school prom night, wherein he blows his female date's brother, while avoiding the girl's advances.

Tommi's fictional date was named Angie, so next we get a real Angie, standup butch dyke comedian ("The only bush I want to see in the White House is Hillary's bush"), who adlibs many reasons why her straight friends would be happier if they became "gay". (She overlooks the fact that, if they started having same-sex lovers or tricks, they'd actually be joining the invisible orientation -- multi-sexual, aka bisexual -- rather than being 100% homo. ) None the less, Angie rocks!

More readings. Folks start leaving. Jen from DPH talks about herpes. My friend Marvin Gordon takes off his shirt to display his tattoo artworks (and surprises me by not stripping entirely), then sings a tango while the crowd claps time.

On comes the amazing gynandrous SHAWNA VIRAGO, with acoustic guitar and smart mouth, who performs three songs: "Some-one down there likes me" (referring to the place where Nixon and Hitler play shuffle-board each Sunday), and "She's got a bigger dick than you!", and "I am a tranny dominatrix." She's incredible! We ululate!

We take a much-needed break, during which most of the audience vanishes. I get to chat with two interesting writers. Then Cindy Emch reads two poems, and invites us all to a new open mikes series, starting Aug. 13 at the queer center's Three Dollar Bill Cafe.
Then five acts pass by, including one which offends me.
Finally Lady Monster reads erotica, and invites us to visit her at LadyMonster.net.

Now please let me impudently offer some friendly advice, however unwelcome, to the also-rans at future Smack Dabs -- those persons who have more talent than the undersigned, but less than the stars. The dabbers are kind, up to a point. To avoid abusing their kindness, perform just ONE item per evening. One long poem or song will go down better than two or three short ones (if all are of equal quality). You're not required to use every one of your five minutes. Leave 'em hoping to see you next time.

For future Smack Dabs, please see Larry-bob's calendar at HolyTitClamps.com.

Saturday July 31, 7:30 pm-10 pm: Landmark Ceremony for the Redstone Labor Temple:
The Redstone Labor Temple will celebrate our historical landmark status July 31st with an evening of entertainment at the Lab 2940 16th Street in the Mission district. A dedication and presentation of the proclamation will be presented by a member of the Board of supervisors and union representatives that once used the building for their offices and the union hall.
Our celebration will include performances by the Labor Temple Chorus, Jaime Cortez, Tommi Aviocolli-Mecca, Barbara Heredia, the Rabbles and other artists that will represent the tenants and neighborhood populations. It is our hope to make people aware of the significance this building holds. In the 1930's a dockworkers strike paralyzed the city when the bodies of two strikers found near the Ferry building. The citizens of San Francisco joined the strikers by not shopping, working or traveling for one day. At the funeral thousands marched and lined the streets up market Street to the Redstone Building, which served as a Union Hall. The Redstone Labor Temple has been a part of an annual march by union workers at Labor fest. The Redstone Labor Temple Association is a new resource for the tenants in the building: Theatre Rhinoceros, El Teatro Esperanza, Luna Sea, Frameline and a host of other services as well as other Non-profit organization in the neighborhood.

Friday August 13th, signup at 7:30, reading at 8 pm: Premiere of Queer Open Mic at the Center's Three Dollar Bill Cafe. 2nd and 4th Fridays. Host Cindy M. Emch with featured readers Shar Rednour & Jackie Strano. Adding to the mixing pot of spoken word in the city is a = new open mic night at the SF LGBT Community Center. Pro grrrl, pro boi, and completely genderqueer in scope, the night aims to combine the raunchy enthusiasm of the Hole in the Wall, the warmth and community of Ashkenaz, the unapologetic queer of the Bearded Lady, the radical politics of Café Macondo and the sweet rhythms of El Rio to create a space for spoken word, poetry and performance that is feminist, multi cultural, multi gendered, completely inclusive and dynamic.
$1-5 donations benefit Femina Potens (http://www.feminapotens.com) and The Center (http://www.sfcenter.org) in an effort to encourage more queer radical art in our community. No one turned away for lack of funds. There will be prizes for all readers and a special drawing for one lucky audience member!
