Strip-search victims suing SF
Were you, or a friend, illegally stripped at an SF jail?
SF STRIP-SEARCH CASE BECOMES CLASS ACTION
Were you illegally stripped naked, in violation of California state law, at a jail run by the City and County of San Francisco? Did this happen to one of your friends?
If so, you should read this story in the San Francisco Chronicle, 11 June 2004: "Strip-search litigation against jail gets judge's approval:
Class-action status allows inmates to seek damages",
by Bob Egelko and Elizabeth Fernandez:
This class action challenges SF's former strip-search policy, BEFORE January 2004. Today SF is trying to obey state law, which limits stripping of inmates.
State law allows local jails to strip you only if you were arrested on charges involving weapons, drugs, or violence; OR if guards have "reasonable" cause to think you're concealing contraband.
For more information, one might try to contact Andrew Schwartz, Esq., the plaintiffs' attorney.
