Environmentalists to address MAXXAM shareholders
at annual meeting

Houston, TX – As part of an ongoing campaign to preserve the last remaining 3% of old-growth redwood left in this country, a representative of North Coast Earth First! who traveled from Humboldt County, California, and a local representative from SACRED Redwood, will address MAXXAM shareholders today at their annual meeting. Activist encourage the company and its shareholders to engage in responsible and sustainable business practices and to preserve the last Ancient Old Growth forests left on earth.

“I have traveled all the way from Humboldt County, California, to Houston. Texas, to talk face-to-face with MAXXAM Corporation about saving these ancient wonders,” said North Coast Earth First! activist Shunka Wakan. “I want to show MAXXAM that we are willing to go that extra mile to preserve these heritage trees, and to appeal to their hearts to help end the ongoing conflict in our home community.”

Houston based corporation MAXXAM and its subsidiary, Pacific Lumber, are responsible for environmentally devastating practices, such as clear-cutting, logging on steep and unstable slopes, and dumping a carcinogenic herbicides onto California soil.

The District Attorney of Humboldt County California, Paul Gallegos, is currently suing Maxxam subsidiary Pacific Lumber Company for over $250 million for fraud. Pacific Lumber has continued to log despite numerous violations of state and federal environmental laws, and years on continuous non-violent protests by Humboldt County residents, and activists from around the globe. MAXXAM CEO Charles Hurwitz took control of Pacific Lumber in 1985 in a hostile takeover and immediately tripled the rate of logging. In addition, he raided $60 million from the workers’ pension fund..

old growth redwoods like Iradia in Gypsy Mountain are a source of life energy for the surrounding forest, and also spiritual inspiration for lost humans like myself..

living in this system where life (tree, human, animal) is treated as a financial commodity, nothing feels better than walking up Gypsy Mountain and putting my arms around Iradia's trunk, looking up and seeing her branches swaying in the breeze..

hugging Iradia helps me find myself in a system that treats both her and i as expendable..

other animals and plants make their home in Iradia's branches, or in the thick soft needles that fall to the ground, becoming duff. The decomposition of the duff creates new carbon topsoil that will be taken up by the roots of young trees. The moist fog is held in place by a healthy canopy with old growths dripping the fog back down in a cycle that supports tree growth..

Loss of old growth trees results in less duff and less moisture circulation, therefore the young redwoods have a more difficult time growing. Compund this with clear-cut logging and the topsoil that took 100 years to make is washed down the hillside into streams with nothing left to create new topsoil, we now witness sun baked clay on many clear-cut sites..

The horrible irony of clearcut logging is that the future of the forests is severely damaged for years. Someone who claims they care about people (loggers) who depend on healthy forests for their livelihood would not clear-cut old growth forests like MAXXAM did. By setting the loggers against the forest defenders, MAXXAM excels at the game of divide and conquer, rapidly raping the forests and leaving loggers without work, then scapegoating tree-sitters as the source of the problem..

The GW Bush/Hurwitz connection is too obvious to ignore, the globalist elite playing games with forest ecosystems and people's lives for profit. The war in Iraq for petroleum is not separate from forest defense, rather interwoven in the US/Israeli imperialist agenda that sucks oil from occupied Iraq, then drives trucks filled with redwoods far away from their homes to be sold as financial surplus, feeding the imperialist war machine..

Restoring old growth redwood ecosystems would increase the biomass of the entire system, more recycled nutrients from falling needles, pleasant moisture fog drip (instead of windy torrential downpours) are just some of the positive aspects of letting the NW temperate rainforests recover from the rapid habitat destruction committed by MAXXAM corportion..
