Gathering at Freshwater

by moth
This Sunday May 16th, people will be gathering at Freshwater tree-sit on Greenwood Heights Rd. off Old Arcata Rd. just north of Eureka..
possible actions for the future and what we can do about the clear cut zones near the Upper Village tree-sit and elsewhere..

the clear-cutting causes erosion of topsoil and exposes patches of clay, more visible each season. The effect of the summer sun on the exposed clay increases dehydration since there is no canopy cover. Invasive species like pampas grass draw up the scarce soil moisture needed by redwood seedlings. redwood sorrel and ferns are both used to photosynthesizing at lower levels of sunlight from tree canopy cover and suffer from UV damage when struggling to live in exposed clear cuts (redwood sorrel seldom seen growing in clear cuts)..

since MAXXAM/Pacific Lumber seems unconcerned about the damage they have caused by clearcutting (they are still cutting in Freshwater watershed and elsewhere) and the Gallegos fraud lawsuit is tied up in red tape boreocracy, it is up to the people of Humboldt to take action and restore the damaged redwoods ecosystem..

other MAXXAM info;

we have heard that MAXXAM is planning to invest millions in a new high tech mechanized mill that will actually cut over 100 jobs. please confirm if anyone has info..

this shows a similar pattern when MAXXAM took over Kaiser Aluminum/steel and eventually went bankrupt, leaving many without jobs. The massive & rapid clear cut logging following the MAXXAM takeover in mid 80's ends up losing jobs also, though MAXXAM CEO Hurwitz follows GW Bush propaganda and blames environmentalists (divide and conquer). helicopter logging (Columbia corporation) loses jobs and is also destructive to canopy wildlife.

if Humboldt had a worker owned logger co-op that could harvest a few trees selectively without the millions $$ lost to MAXXAM CEO administration, loggers could work less and get paid more, resulting in healthier forests and sustainable jobs 4 the future. This contrasts to liquidation logging practiced by MAXXAM, where everything is cut at once. the problem is with excess money diverted to the CEO, maybe money funneled into US/Israeli military for Hurwitz/GW Bush imperialism?
