Finally! DoNotJunkMail.com

by John Cress (jtc88 [at] hotmail.com)
Send a message out loud and clear that we liked Do Not Call and Do Not Junk Mail is next. 100 Million Trees cut per year for unwanted junk mail is unacceptable!
Finally!! ... DoNotJunkMail.com is here!

888refused.com Press Release

May 16,2004, San Francisco, CA – 888refused.com (1-888-REFUSED) has started a national do not junk mail movement. They are offering a recyclable, self-inking stamp (that is reusable) printed with the word “REFUSED™”. The purpose of this Trademark stamp is to show that certain types of received mail, mainly junk mail, will not be accepted and will be "REFUSED".

Postal procedures are to take back mail that has been refused by the recipient. As a rule, the Postal Service returns first class mail to the sender. However, third class mail, or bulk rate mail, does not get returned and typically the post office just throws it away or increasingly recycles it.

“Americans are fed-up with junk mail,” says John Cress, originator and co-founder of 888refused.com. “By accepting junk mail we are just perpetuating the problem. If enough Americans start to refuse their postal junk mail on a regular basis, our legislators will begin to listen and hopefully take action by implementing a ‘National Do Not Junk Mail Registry’ similar to the ‘National Do Not Call Registry’ recently implemented by the Federal Trade Commission,” hopes Cress.

Furthermore, handling junk mail is a waste of our personal time and an invasion of our privacy. By stamping their junk mail “REFUSED™” and putting it out for their mail carrier on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, Americans will be empowered in creating change now. "By refusing junk mail Americans are sending a strong message to the powers that be that something needs to change now", says Steve Adler, co-founder. "Eventually, as more and more Americans join in this cause, word will get back to our legislators with enough strength that laws will be implemented to stop unsolicited postal mail from being received by those who have subscribed to a ‘Do Not Junk Mail’ list."

According to 888refused.com, in 1991, 62 million trees were cut for junk mail. Currently, 100 million trees per year are being cut down for junk mail. Most of this junk mail unfortunately just ends up back in landfills since it is typically very hard to recycle due to the coatings, dyes, and plastics typically used for junk mail. This is a “double whammy against the environment” says Cress.

“We are just pushing for long overdue change. Just get in the habit of politely putting out your junk mail marked "REFUSED" as if it were outgoing mail on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and you will be doing your part to create the needed change now.” If enough people say “I’m not accepting this into my home” it’s that strong message that will lead to change. Accepting junk mail is agreeing that it’s ok. Stamps are available for sale at http://www.888refused.com or by dialing 1-888-REFUSED. A portion of proceeds is donated to re-forestation and forest preservation efforts. We are non-profit so your contribution is tax deductible.
