VIOLENCE PREVENTION SPECIAL PUBLIC HEARING
Monday, May 10
4:00 PM-8:30 PM
Oakland City Hall, Council Chambers
Friends,
As you may know, there is a hearing on Monday to discuss next steps for violence prevention in Oakland, and to begin discussions about a potential ballot measure for November. A number of citizen groups are working on proposals to share with the council, and some of them are insisting that an increase in police is the only solution to prevent violent crime in Oakland.
We want to make sure there is a high turnout of people there who can articulate the sentiment of the majority of Oaklanders as expressed by the over 51,000 votes in favor of Measure R (65.86% of the total vote)- that Violence Prevention means a comprehensive plan to help people change their lives.
Therefore, we would like to encourage you to spread the word extensively about this hearing, and to bring the message that you are ready, as always, to work with the city on a proposal that makes sense, but ready to oppose any proposal that does not primarily focus on programs proven to work, or that marginalizes such programs in favor of an initiative that focuses heavily on funding only law enforcement.
