I went to try to sit in the audience. It would be really interesting to hear what was going on in the District Attorney's office. Several TV stations and newspapers reported how grim and threatening it looked from the perspective of arrestees, and how the DA was really going to throw the book at them this time. The fact that they didn't even hold the arraignment and start the cases shows that the police really had no evidence of wrongdoing for these individuals. Given the list of hundreds of other people who were on the list for arraignments this morning, I don't think that everyone's charges for crime just get routinely dropped in San Francisco because it is so soft on crime, or that the police are incapable of evidence gathering. It means that they had serious problems with being able to prove these two cases in court.

or the fact that they were trumped up charges.

Yes trumped up charges is right.
What about our budget woes?
How was the city able to afford all those cops?
There were hundreds of them.
Someone should be investigating that.
Who gave Kamala Harris permission to hire those cops?

If demonstrators would stay within their permitted march there would be no problem. It is the idiots who do the "breakaway" marches that cause the problems, and they accomplish nothing. Merchants whose businesses are disrupted by breakaway marches should sue for lost income and damages. Why don't these unruly children grow up?

what is the jackass logic behind the calls to charge protesters for exercising the right to demonstrate? you people are insane.

Um, I have been reading these awesome perspective from all sides of people being from the anti war movement, the anti radical movement, and also from the haters.
A few thoughts.
You caanot permit political expression, you cannot permit opposition to the state. Actually there were problems with the permitted march as well, there was aggressive police behaviors with the answer parade sherrifs and with people flyering people on the street about the march. Maybe things will be more interesting after they arm their parade sherrifs. The police had a hard on for the protestors that was shockingly blatant from their behaviors.
"Idiots...problems,..accomplish nothing" blah blah blah. There is beter analysis to be had, but be certain that what happens on things like breakaways do accomplish things and they ellivate peoples' spirits and people feel what solidarity looks like under a police state. There was a lack of good messaging, and outreach. Breakaways are not the only tactic that works, and they are not the most radical thing that can be done. But they are great at building, on the street skills and communication. Hello it garnered more press than, the main march that was 25 to 50 times it's size.
For so called peace activists and people who attack from the left, shame on you. The violence that occured on saturday was solely perpetuated by the police on peaceful protestors. The police could have contained the breakaway without hurting anyone or even arresting anyone.
