Aristide Arrives In Jamaica
Haitian Coup of 2004
3/26:
Elected Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's Lavalas party "emerged from hiding on Thursday to demand the new government disarm all sides in the divided country and end intolerance, arrests and killings", but US selected leader Gerard Latortue, is now openly supporting the former death squad members who overthrew Haiti's democracy. Aristide is still in Jamaica, but US "National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice is telling the Jamaican government if Aristide is not immediately expelled from the country... consequences would be exacted against Jamaica in full force by the U.S."
The US is also pressuring the 15-nation Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to recognize Latortue but CARICOM has so far held out and is still demanding an international investigation into the US backed coup d'etat and political kidnapping of a democratically elected leader.
3/17: Gerard Latortue, the US selected Prime Minister of Haiti, has formed a government containing no representation from elected President Aristide's Lavalas party. Defense Department letters indicate the US supplied 20,000 M-16s and other equipment to the Dominican military over the past two years and many of the weapons appear to be in the hands of Haitian death squads that are now rounding up and killing pro-democracy activists (Audio From Flashpoints).
