The DA of Alameda Country is still attempting to prosecute 25 people who were arrested at the Port of Oakland on April 7, 2003. The defendants, known as the “Oakland 25” are being charged with bogus misdemeanors, such as “disrupting a business” and “creating a public nuisance.”

What these hearings lack in justice, they make up for in entertainment value, at least for those of us who appreciate dark humor. Nevertheless, the DA’s office is not presenting this charade for the purpose of amusing an audience. This sort of production plays best in an empty theater.

We supporters filled the courtroom for the November hearing, and now we need to do so again on January 9th. By just showing up, taking a seat and quietly being there, we express solidarity with the defendants, and that helps to spoil the DA’s show. It’s kind of like putting sunlight on a vampire.
