Serve Your Community and the Nation
Become a Selective Service System Local Board Member

The Selective Service System wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as members of a local draft board.

Prospective Board Members must be citizens of the United States , at least 18 years old, and registered with the Selective Service (if male). Prospective Board Members may not be an employee of any law enforcement occupation, not be an active or retired member of the Armed Forces, and not have been convicted of any criminal offense.

Once identified as qualified candidates for appointment, prospective Board Members are recommended by the Governor and appointed by the Director of Selective Service, who acts on behalf of the President in making appointments. Each new member receives 12 hours of initial training after appointment, followed by 4 hours of annual training for as long as he or she remains in the position. They may serve as Board Members for up to 20 years, if desired.

Local Board Members are uncompensated volunteers who play an important community role closely connected with our Nation's defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 Local and Appeal Boards throughout America would decide which young men, who submit a claim, receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on Federal guidelines.

Positions are available in many communities across the Nation. If you believe you meet the standards for Selective Service Board Membership, and wish to be considered for appointment please visit our web site at: http://www.sss.gov/fslocal.htm

During Peacetime
The Board Member program is one of the primary components of the Selective Service System. Over 11,000 volunteers are currently trained in Selective Service regulations and procedures so that if a draft is reinstated, they will be able to fulfill their obligations fairly and equitably. Board members undergo an initial 12-hour training session and then participate in annual training in which they review sample cases similar to real-life situations.

During a Draft
Registrants with low lottery numbers will be ordered to report for a physical, mental, and moral evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station to determine whether they are fit for military service. Once he is notified of the results of the evaluation, a registrant will be given 10 days to file a claim for exemption, postponement, or deferment. At that time, board members will begin reviewing and deciding the outcome of the individual registrant's case. They may personally interview the registrant and persons who know him to gain a better understanding of his situation. A man may appeal a Local Board's decision to a Selective Service District Appeal Board.

don't we have draft registration? My friend just had to go fight his school because he did register like normal at age 18, as a conscientious objector because he's a mennonite, but trying to attend school after age 25, (end of the draft age), they were holding up his registration by saying that the selective service didn't have him listed and so he had to go over there in person and straighten them out.

This is nothing new. Clinton was setting up draft boards too. Just breathe.

Winston is right that Clinton set up draft boards. However, I'm sure that he realizes how different the climate is now than when Clinton held office -- and it's this fact that causes many of us fear and concern. http://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff11052003.html

Doesnt it seem kind of funny that a man that took advantage of his parents fiscal wealth to avoid having to go to vietnam, and then on top of that disappeared for 17 months while he was supposed to be on active military duty here in the states, is going to turn around and try to force everyone else to give up their lives for him?

oh and Alfa, what do you think is useful about giving up your life and existence so that american business can colonize third world countries and profit from their resouces? I am just curious.

Iraq doesn't merit a draft. If the US can't take the heat, they need to just get out.

There should definatly not be a draft (unless the U.S. is invaded). If one appeared all of a sudden to help with peacekeeping (which is any military action that is not defense of the homeland) I would hit on the recruter-mind you I'm straight as a board- and wear a dress to come off as a homosexual to avoid fighting. Mind you I do like America though. I believe that it is a truely blessed country with great opportunities for its citizens. But I am not a fighter and unless my city became a battlefield I would rather never touch a gun. Call me a wuss if you want but do not call me unpatriotic and don't tell me to leave. I hate how prowar people scream that anyone who disagres with Bush should leave. First of all its HARD to go from one country to the next and survive. Second I know that disagreeing with Bush is not the same as hating America (It is simply disagreeing with the current leadership). Hard ass conservatives that equate the two usually don't like freedom of speech if it is a liberal talking. Also I hate how prowar people try to shut up protestors by saying "we are already in war. support the troops." This is just an different way of saying "i don't care what you think. I think we should go to war and so I'm going to use the hard working men and women in the military to shut you up. Americans like yourself have too many freedoms like saying things I don't like." Too often in recent American history (vietnam, korea) stupid old white men (read congressmen and the president) are more that happy to send other peoples children to die in wars. We would probably still have a draft if it weren't for the fact the the vietnam draft lottery didn't discriminate and took these politician's sons into war. Then it ended quick. America is great for the freedom to choose. I CHOOSE to be disrespectful to dumass leaders and closeminded elders. I CHOOSE to be a wuss and sit in my. I CHOOSE to appriciate the sacrifices American solders of today and yesterday have made for the world. I CHOOSE have patriotic I want to be. It is choices like these that make America what it is.

Nobody in politics would try and bring back the draft because they know 3/4's of the US is against it
