Support Oakland Day Laborers at Wednesday Meeting!

by Apoyo
Support Oakland Day Laborers as they demand that City Sups respect their rights!
To all community allies and friends:

Come out in support of Oakland Day Laborers

This Wednesday, July 16th at 1:30pm

2648 International (corner 27th St.)

Room #B151 in the Basement

(the building is called Perinatal Council)

In response to escalating police intimidation and repression, the police ticketing and /or threatening to ticket employers, and the city's new labor zoning policies (aka denial of the day laborers basic human right to choose where to find work), the day laborers of Oakland have been organizing and pressuring the city to respond to their demands. This Wednesday they will be meeting with Oakland City Council President Ignacio de la Fuente.

Please come out and show your solidarity with these workers to demonstrate to the city that they're not alone in their struggle & that their voices must be heard.

OAKLAND DAY LABORERS WILL BE MEETING WITH IGNACIO DE LA FUENTE AROUND THESE DEMANDS:

1. Stop the Police Repression

2. Stop fining employers

3. Repeal the Anti-Solicitation & Anti-Loitering Ordinances

4. That the existing city-funded Day Labor Program respect their right to choose where to find work

5. That the city respect their right to organize themselves

If you can’t be physically present this Wednesday,

Please fax / e-mail the offices of all the councilmembers and to show your support for the Oakland day laborers. A sample fax will follow.

CALL IGNACIO DE LA FUENTE'S OFFICE TODAY AND DEMAND THAT HE MEET WITH THE OAKLAND DAY LABORERS. 510.238.7005

IGNACIO DE LA FUENTE'S ASSISTANT, CARLOS PLAZOLA, JUST SENT OUT E-MAILS SAYING THAT THEY REFUSE TO SHOW UP AT TOMORROW'S MEETING.

LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE DISAPPOINTED AND URGE THEM TO COME.

Dear Community Allies:

Thank you for your continued support of the Oakland day laborers. Ignacio de la Fuente's and Carlos Plazola's blatant refusal to show up at an organized meeting of a concerned group of day laborers and community members is a negation of the entire problem.

Injustice continues on a daily basis - day laborers consistently face police harassment and many potential employers have fled the area because of the threat of $1000 fines.

Day laborers - struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis - have organized themselves to speak with Councilpresident Ignacio de la Fuente to testify to their struggle for survival and to demand their basic human right to look for work in public areas. This was always meant to be a format of open dialogue.

We hope you will still come out and hear them speak tomorrow.

2648 International (corner of 27th)
Basement Room 151
1:30pm

Community supporters such as Centro Legal de la Raza, PUEBLO, La Lucha Unida del Jornaleros, the Labor Immigrant Organizing Network, and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, along with countless other community groups, will be calling Ignacio's office to urge him to meet with the day laborers.

Please join them in calling Ignacio's office TODAY.

Thank you for your continued support.
