Viacom's coming Propaganda Campaign?

by Vendal
It seems that Viacom, through it's "Blockbuster Video" chain, is set to begin a propaganda campaign of it's own. (Warning: NOT A NEWS ARTICLE. Though the information is factual, I'm telling the facts in order to get opinions from others about what should be done. My opinion on it should not be taken as the opinion to go by, unless agreed upon. =) )
I just got off of work tonight, and I figured I'd give the people a heads up. I work at a Blockbuster Video store (yes, I know they're evil... what can I say, I didn't see it until today), and while sifting through the ads for the coming week I found some particularily interesting and somewhat frightening.

Blockbuster is about to begin a large (presumably nation wide) "Support our Military" campaign, asking for donations to support the entertainment of military forces. This is propaganda at it's best, taking a step up from the at least slightly more forgivable and less hard-lined "support our troops" slogan.

The name tags that they are going to have us wear state "Ask us how you can support our Military", for example. (well, not me. They give me one of those, I quit on the spot... as it stands, I don't know if I can still work for a company that even thinks about having such a campaign)

Supporting the troops is one thing: at least that has some hint that it's about supporting individual human beings. Granted, even that is laced with propaganda and an unspoken intent of supporting what they are DOING. But supporting the Military brings the whole set to the table without apologies: the hateful and violent foreign policies, the strike first ask questions later diplomacy, and the blood for oil militarism.

If you ask me, it sounds like Viacom is seeking to up the ante on Propaganda.

I figured I'd post this more to get reactions and feelings on what should be done, if anything. Am I reading this the wrong way? Does "Military" not have a more agressive meaning than "Troops"? Is even the fact that they're doing it at all wrong, when they could be "supporting" groups that actually deserve support like people dying of starvation and cancer? I could be overreacting, or perhaps I'm right on the button with this. I leave it up to you to decide. The information's in your hands now.

This campaign is set to begin May 6th and go until May 23rd, according to the propaganda I found. I'm interested to hear what people think of this. I need some second opinions on if this is as bad as it seems.

Begin the boycott.
Not that most people here are already likely boycotting the censoring corperate rats over at Blockbustercom.
Notwithstanding, spread the word through any means available, I know I will. Make them feel the hurt. Support non-corperate video stores.

Yeah, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who found their choice of words, and decision of who to support disconcerting. =)

I'm going into work today, and demand that we not participate in this event. If they refuse, time to find new employment.

Speaking of which, now that I'm job hunting again... anyone have any use for a Software Engineering student? =)
