April 7 Response Coalition

A coalition including the ILWU and other Labor Groups, PUEBLO (the
city's foremost police watchdog group), the Green Party of Alameda
County, the People's Nonviolent Response Committee, and others, is
preparing a formal response to the violence instigated by the Oakland
Police Department at the Port of Oakland on Monday, April 7. A formal
list of coalition partners and demands is not yet complete. More
information will be posted in this space as appropriate. In the
meantime, Rebecca Kaplan, Kenny Mostern, and Laura Wells of the
Green Party County Council have put forward A Proposal to Create an
Oakland Peace Force. Your comments are appreciated.

Flyer for the April 28, 2003 community meeting "Ending Police
Violence: At the Port and In Our Communities."

I am glad Sri Louise is ok, but can we PLEASE use pictures of other people. I don't like this whole Jessica Lynch approach. And she should stop making comments like she now knows what it must have felt like to face the klan...
PLEASE...

i'm so tired of liberal martyrs. police violence sucks, but honestly, I can't stand when a liberal educated kid gets any taste of what life is like for _many_ of the poor _routinely_ and then claims to know and understand oppression in its totality form experience. It's like when liberals do direct action, then get thrown in jail for a few days and dont eat for a couple days and come out acting like ghandiesque martyrs when really they just went to jail as tourists. lets get over it and make some changes instead of getting bogged down in our false martyrs.

I think her comments had some validity in that both the Klan and the Oakland Police (who did not wear their badges and refused to id themselves) were both cowards in that they both tried to hide who they were instead of having the courage to identify themselves. We pay the cops to "protect and serve" and instead we get this type of behavior. The klan were terrorists who had no obligation to serve the public.

I'm sure the klan would be very happy with the treatment some have received at the hands of the OPD.

It’s true that the protesters only got wooden bullets and bean bags when the cops use real bullets on many others (particularly brothers) in other instances. I think it’s important for us all to become allies –not tear each other down. Of course we are not happy with all that we hear but it is important for more of the white and those better off to understand that what happened at the port is only a small sample of what has been going on in the hood for so long. The police have been a racist tool and have helped divide the races over many, many years. The police have always enforced the status quo and that usually included keeping black and white separate. There’s a lot of anger out there by the black community cause while they’ve suffered all these years with police injustice, white folks tended to just stand by and watch or blindly support the police. I think there is hope when more people become educated and start to see through all the lies and myths. We need to be united and teach each other.
