Only a few days after the smallpox vaccinations began? Hmmm...
... were these marines given small pox vaccine?
well, from what i understand about the process, the vaccine creates a pustule on the skin, which contains the live virus, and must be kept clean and covered at all times, to keep the disease from spreading. but the most important bit about the whole thing is that those who are not immunized should not be around those who are, because there is a risk of the disease spreading from contact.
i've heard of strep-A "eating flesh", rotting tissue, destroying tonsils and causing bad infections, but a "rash" that spreads from soldier to soldier? don't know that i buy that...

— SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Reuters) - A flesh-eating bacteria has killed at least one young recruit at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California and made 100 others ill, military officials said on Monday.
The bacteria, known as Group A streptococcus, also may be responsible for the unexplained deaths of two other teenage recruits at the training base since late November, officials said.

UPDATED: 3:34 p.m. EST December 18, 2002
SAN DEIGO -- Physical training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego likely will resume Thursday after being halted because of an outbreak of streptococcus A, officials said.
Maj. Gen. Jan Huly, commander of the base, told reporters Tuesday that the outbreak is under control.
However, wenty-two people remain hospitalized in connection with the outbreak, although tests haven't confirmed that all of them suffer from strep A infections, said Maj. Kim Miller.
Among them, a recruit remains in critical condition with strep A pneumonia, Miller said. A drill instructor also is among those still hospitalized, she said.
