BUDGET HEARINGS NEXT WEEK ACROSS THE STATE Stop the Prison Boom
Prison construction and Prison Guard salaries are one of the only areas receiving a de facto exemption from severe budget cuts occurring in other areas such as k-12 and higher education, mental health, and economic assistance to the poor.
Gov Gray Davis and many key legislators have received large campaign contributions and a recent trip to Hawaii from the CCPOA- Prison guards union, and have demonstrated that they are willing to fulfill their every wish and will not make cuts - they were awarded a recent pay raise of 37%, bringing average salaries before overtime to the $75,000/yr range, the same as a tenured professor. With overtime, due to the union's deliberate blocking of filling positions, many earn over $100,000.

California faces a historically unprecedented budget crisis. Of the $10 billion in mid-year cuts
Governor Davis has proposed, a miniscule .1% of the cuts come from Corrections' $4.8 billion budget.
We propose three courageous, common sense cuts to Corrections to save the state more than $1 billion per
year, every year:
1) Cancel the proposed Delano II prison.
2) Adopt the options outlined by the Legislative Analyst's Office, which will free over 20,000 prison
beds.
3) Reduce the extraordinarily high number of parolees returned to prison on technicalities.
For a pamphlet detailing these options, Contact Critical Resistance.
