FCC v. microradio
12/11:FCC agents and marshals raided Berkeley Liberation Radio's studio in Oakland on 12/11, confiscating all equipment on the premises and shutting down the community station for the time being. The agents left behind a thick pile of warrants for the seizure of all broadcast-related equipment, clearly detailing the FCC's hatred of unlicensed microradio and ultimate plan to put a stop to "all microradio stations, organizing, equipment and illegal programming." Station volunteers and community radio activists describe the raid as a "vicious assault on freedom of speech." BLR began broadcasting at 104.1 FM in 1998 after Free Radio Berkeley was ordered off the air by a federal court. A demonstration of community support for the station will be held on 12/18 at noon at the Oakland Federal Building.
