-00:00 Leslie Kean:interview with the legal advisor to the PLO; Colombia seeks more US dollars; woman brutalized by police for wearing Muslim dress
-01:00 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: Ivory Coast fighting flares, US troops enroute?; Iraq says full and unfettered access; Iraq tells Tony Blair to put up or shut up; Cairo says weapons of mass destruction cannot be hidden; UN resolution demands Israel to stop the seige of Arafat; Israeli death squads kill nine; Kofi Annon talks about peace and war in MLK venue (3 min audio excerpt)
-06:30 Leslie Kean: two years of the second intifada; 1800 dead; now w Michael Terrazi, legal advisor to the PLO, from Jerusalem.. Michael: I spoke to the people inside Arafat's compound; Sharon will not harm Arafat, he is a convenient scapegoat for Israel.. we don't have an exact list of people inside; the Israel claim that '50 terrorists' are inside is public relations.. five weeks ago, extremist Palestinian groups agreed to stop actions inside Israel.. that lasted five weeks, but in that time Israel killed 70 civilians.. and the extremist groups went back to business as usual.. today nine Palestinians killed by Israeli death squads.. Leslie: what is the relationship of Arafat to the Palestinian suicide bombers?.. Michael: why does Israel conduct these kind of raids?.. Sharon needs to keep the violence going, if peace breaks out, he will lose power.. Arafat is his scapegoat, while Israel keeps the violence going.. about yesterday's UN resolution demanding Israel stop attacking Arafat.. UN has been an impotent body when it comes to enforcing resolutions against Israel.. Pals say we don't have F16s, heliocopter gunships, we'll fight back anyway we can.. Leslie: Pals defying curfews, taking risks to peacefully demonstrate.. Michael: like in Nablus, under curfew most of the last two months.. like the 14 year old boy went to buy cigarettes, and shot four times in the chest.. four civilians in Ramallah shot to death for peacefully protesting.. about the Israeli flag now flying over Arafat's compound.. Michael: the next couple days.. Israel could decide to retreat, unlikely.. or they could kill Arafat and everyone else in the compound, also unlikely.. or they could negotiate a partial surrender.. Leslie: Israel moving the 'green line'?.. Michael: the 'green line' is the 1967 border.. what Israel has done the last 35 years, is moving, moving, moving the border.. now 40% of the West Bank settled by Israel.. now talk of building a fence.. Palestinians OK about a fence, but want Israel to build it on the green line.. but Israel building the fence even further than their present illegal encroachment.. one example, one Pal town, the fence cuts them off from their agricultural land.. Israel already holds 78% of historical Palestine, and are occupying 40%+ of the remaining 22% (totals about 87%).. about the danger that Israel will use a war on Iraq to 'transfer' (ie ethnic cleansing) of the Christian and Muslim Arabs in the West Bank.. Palestinians see the war on Iraq as an unfair war, in that UN resolutions against Israel are never enforced.. Event: protest Stop the War on Iraq and Free Palestine, Sat Sept 28 assemble Dolores Park 11am; at noon march to Civic Center for a rally.. more info 415-861-7444

-24:45 Leslie Kean: Colombia president Uribe flew to Washington DC to beg for more money to 'fight terrorism' and 'stem the flow of drugs'.. but other observers say Colombian and US policies acually increasing terrorism and enhancing the flow of drugs.. now w Daniel Garcia Pena of Colombian NGO.. and Sandro Alvarez: of Global Exchange.. Sandro: we've seen how the conflict has escalated, and many corporations have lobbied for the aid.. we've seen how the coca spraying has hurt agriculture, and the health of farmers, but not hurt coca production.. Bush admin requested 100 million dollars to protect a private oil company pipeline.. Daniel: the aid has served to escalate the conflict, and the aerial spraying has forced thousands of poor to flee their land.. Uribe has come to office with a mandate to strenght the military.. his first action was to enact a 'state of emergency' and increase taxes.. Sandro: the vote in the Congress delayed until after the election.. we need to get the word out about how the Colombian paramilitaries listed by the US as terrorist groups actually benefit from US aid money.. Event: this Friday, Colombia mobilization in the US.. a national day of action.. tonight a film Valencia near 21st, from a labor delegation to Colombia.. tomorrow night 7PM Womens Building in SF, a dance performance, theatre, music from Colombia.. and Friday at 4:30PM, 'bike for Colombia', more info 415-575-5534

-00:00 Dennis Bernstein:"Daniel introduction: an hour long interview with legendary whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, of 'Pentagon Papers' fame
-00:50 Dennis: about Daniel Ellsberg (Salon.com), 1960's Marine Corp Commander, Pentagon official, turned whistleblower in 1969 when he released the 'Pentagon Papers'.. about his new biography, 'Secrets'.. Daniel: about current events, Rumsfeld, weapons inspectors.. about the intentions of Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, and Rumsfeld.. to deceive the American people.. Saddam does not have a suicidal urge.. unless faced with death by US action.. that's the way to get him to use any weapons of mass destruction he might have.. if we attack him, he will use all his weapons against Israel or the US.. I (fear) the world will see the use of nuclear weapons before the end of the year.. US wants regime change.. for the oil.. about the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons legitimized.. will greatly increase the threat of global destruction of the human species.. about Ellsberg's new book, 'Secrets'.. about the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.. more about the current situation.. Daniel: when I went to the press with the Pentagon Papers.. the NY Times injoined.. the Washington Post.. the Boston Globe.. all defying the Attorney General.. an amazing rebellion.. now.. we've seen the same kind of courage.. witness Scott Ritter.. and Colleen Ralley (sp?) of the FBI.. Talking to: the people in the government who know we're on a dangerous reckless course.. who have seen in writing, estimates to that result.. PLEASE COME FORWARD.. Dennis: like Nixon needed a special group?.. Daniel: we have real danger in the world.. Saddam launching a weapon against us, is not a real danger.. Congress should demand real assessments.. about nuclear whistleblower, Mordecai Vanunu.. a technical worker in the Israeli nuclear weapons program.. an Israeli.. gradually became convinced that "Mordecaithe program could not be justified.. total censorship in Israel.. a total lie that Israel would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons in Israel.. the number of Israel nuclear weapons in the hundreds.. what country in the world have the right to have hundreds of nuclear weapons?.. NOT ONE.. Vanunu was lured out of England by an Israeli agent to Israel, and kidnapped to Israel and imprisoned by a secret trial.. for 17 years.. he is a hero.. Israel's nuclear program increases the possibility that Israel itself will be destroyed by a nuclear weapon..

-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction: Iraq agrees to weapon inspections; part two of Sabra and Chatilla; Anna Reno, rebel without a pause
-00:53The Knight Report: news summary
-05:00 Dennis: now w Dennis Halliday, former UN weapons inspector.. Mr. Halliday: Iraq actions driven by fear of the US military.. the UN will have to give the Iraqis room to be inspected.. Bush is frustrated.. but they will have to be patient.. Dennis: Bush says, this not a matter of inspection?.. Mr. Halliday: their presence was quite impressive.. but Washington can always find a loophole.. the sacntions have little influence on the government of Iraq, but the effects have been felt by the innocent civilians.. malnutrition, and through water borne disease. because of the attacks by US forces.. loss of income, loss educational system.. THE SANCTIONS NEED TO BE TERMINATED.. A VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW..

-24:10 REMEMBERING SABRA AND CHATILLA, Part 2: Mary Bishop: it has been 20 years since Israeli armed forces and their allies the Lebanese *Christian* Phalangists entered Sabra and Chatilla camps and slaughtered 3000 Palestinians men, women, and childen.. the second part of a two part series.. now w survivor, ^^^^: (horrific remembrances).. (no further review tonight, this material is too upsetting for me today, listen to it yourself)
-36:40 essay by a 14 year old in Sabra.. 'Israel slaughtered us'..
-41:25 Dennis: lady comedian, Anna Reno.. Rebel Without a Pause, Reflections on 9/11.. reads..
-48:00 Dennis with Anna Reno in studio.. Anna: we were reduced to uselessness.. every single ATM had been emptied.. the banks had been closed.. one of the worst feelings anyone could have.. at the Brava Theatre Center.. Dennis: you were one of the first comedians to take 9/11 to the stage.. Anna: how little we were prepared for any of this.. poorly organized.. we have an opportunity now.. we have been propping up bad dictatorships around the world.. Dennis: Reno at the Bravo Theatre in SF..

-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction: former UN weapons inspector, Scott Ritter; Rumsfeld puts the lie to the Bush promise that the bombing of Vieques will end; possible unification of North and South Korea
-00:42 Dennis: "Scott now w former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, Scott Ritter.. Rumsfeld said that the last thing we want is a 'smoking gun'.. Scott: before we go to war, we need to inspect.. the Iraqi's have agreed to unfettered access.. peaceful nonviolent and.. Bush said: "the goal is disarmament, not inspections".. Scott: the fear of the unknown preys upon the ignorant.. this is not about disarmament, but about regime change.. weapons inspections threaten them.. if Iraq is disarmed we may have to lift sanctions.. you'd have Iraq welcomed back into the family of nations.. the administratin is confused now.. I would advise Rumsfeld to read the US Constitution, and read the UN charter.. the danger is that the Bush administration.. stacking the inspections, manipulating the inspection process.. you have to go by the law.. the Bush administraton is not honest, we must question their motives.. Dennis: Steven Hayes in the Wall Street Journal attacked you today.. your response?.. Scott: Steven Hayes is an attack dog, his job is to assist the war against Iraq.. now I have to spend my time to defend myself, but I refuse to do so..
-10:35 Dennis: opposition to the war on Iraq growing.. now an excert"Medea of a disruption to a Rumsfeld pro-war address to Congress.. (sound of Medea Benjamin in the background!).. now w Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Children's Alliance on her way to Iraq.. Barbara: I'm going to Iraq with Voices in the Wilderness.. "Barbaramy fifth trip.. delivering baby food and medicine.. I'm going into the schools to get their voices.. we're setting up a permanent peace team in Iraq.. we should have weapons inspectors.. they've been there, there is nothing left.. we need to end the sanctions, the sanctions are killing people there.. our government is despicable, unbelievable.. against all international law.. Dennis: Sharon to use the war as cover to force the Palestinians to flee to Jordan.. Barbara: could very well be the cover Israel is looking for.. the King of Jordan said Israel will be met by force if they try to do that.. but history shows that these leaders bend over for Israel.. Barbara: about my going to Iraq.. I'm met with open arms in Iraq and Palestine.. I don't feel scared at all.

-21:21 Dennis: after 50 years of separation between North and South Korea, both countries are building a historic railroad track to reconnect the countries..
-38:40 music break
-39:35 Dennis: now w Professor Debra Santana of Mills College about the US terrorist bombings of Vieques.. Prof. Santana: about a press conference question to Rumsfeld about (false) reports that the US Navy was attacked by protestors.. Rumsfeld (sort of) denied the reports, but said that Vieques was important to the US military and implied that the island will not be freed in 2003 as GW has stated..

-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction: remembering Sabra and Chatilla, 20 years after, and an interview w Robert Fisk about 9/11 and the drumbeat for war against Iraq
-01:00Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: Iraqi president Saddam Hussein hosts a meeting.. wants weapons of mass destruction destruction to include Israel's nuclear stockpile.. preparations for an invasion continue.. Sudan's foreign minister says attack is iminent.. US wants Iraq's oil.. Pakistan Al-Quada arrested.. sixth Yemeni youth arrested for attending Al-Quada training camp.. 700 cops shut down a Georgia highway to arrest a Shoney diner Muslim doctor.. on this date, JP Morgan bombed in 19xx, and Sabra and Chatila refugee camps massacred in 1982
-07:15 Dennis: Bush continues to call for war on Iraq.. "Robertnow w Robert Fisk, journalist for the London Independent.. Robert: you would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the events of 9/11.. strange that Americans are not moved by the massacre of 1700 innocent civilians at Sabra and Chatila.. I spoke at George Washington University, attended by relatives of the dead at the Pentagon.. I wasn't going to muzzle my thoughts or speech.. America is the land of the free, and one should be able to say what one thinks.. It is a tribute to America that.. Americans want to hear an opposing point of view.. Dennis: quite the contrary of what the US press wants to do.. Robert: when I went to the UN General Assembly to hear Bush.. when the US press people realized I didn't buy the Bush line.. I told the journalists around me that American presidents always say "we have no quarrel with the people or (pick a nation)".. and sure enought Bush said "we have no quarrel with the people of Afghanistan".. means the B52s are on the way.. US trying to link Saddam with 9/11, but not true.. about Israel and Palestine.. Dennis: about Donald Rumsfeld?.. Robert: Nation Magazine, Sept 2.. article by Jason ^^^^.. lists the number of officials in the Bush administration in the Israeli lobby.. Rumsfeld has been profiled.. more and more speaking not as a spokesman for America, but speaking as a spokesman for Israel.. when he referred to the occupied territories, as the 'so-called occupied territories'.. about Colin Powell who sent out a memo to the state department that they were no longer to refer to the occupied territories as occupied terroritories but as 'disputed territories'.. on BBC I referred to occupied territories, an Israeli spokesman disputed.. they are occupied territories, with tanks and army.. when you have a man with his hand on the trigger (Rumsfeld).. so distant from the reality of politics in the Middle East.. obvious from his comments Sept 2001, he talked like Arab Americans were not 'real Americans'.. almost all Americans came from outside America.. when you listen to Rumsfeld you feel he has forgotten the history of his own country.. Dennis: Rumsfeld an advisor to Sharon?.. Sharon dancing in his own office.. Robert: I get the impression that the US is about to try and remake the map of the Middle East.. (details).. US dissing Syria and Lebanon.. Saudi Arabia the 'kernel of all evil'.. Iran, North Korea.. Egypt being penalized for imprisonment of human rights workers.. overall, an United States shooting at all Arab state at the same time.. US and the Israelis about to try and remake the map of the Middle East in Sharons's dream.. if the US were to control Iraq, it would control massive oil resources, control oil prices.. control Saudi revenues.. enormous economic ambitions.. like in Korea and Vietnam.. US invoking images of Hitler, Stalin.. the press portraying Bush as Churchill.. the second world war was a real war.. no anniversaries of Dec 7, 1941 in the 40's.. unlike Sept 11 now.. Robert: the US and Europeans have managed to wage war by proxy.. about the Iraqi opposition that Poppy Bush called to rise up, but deserted to be slaughtered.. now US doesn't have a proxy force in Iraq, so US forces for the first time since Vietnam, will be on the ground.. Iraqi people may initially say thanks for coming to liberate us, but after that??? the Americans seem to be involving themselves without a clear vision of what happens next?.. an imperial occupation?.. other countries occupied too?.. about Kofi Annan..

-35:23 REMEMBERING SABRA AND CHATILLA, part 1: Poetry: Being Palestinian Is Enough To Get You Killed.. Nora Eracot: every September 16th, Pals remember a three day massacre that left 1700+ Palestinians dead in Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps in Beruit.. the Israeli army began their invasion by bombing refugee camps in southern Lebanon.. led by Ariel Sharon.. (history of the Israel invasion, and the murder of Lebanon's president).. about the massacre of 2400 and more murdered.. by Israel proxies the so-called 'Christian' Phalangists.. Sharon called a 'man of peace' by George Bush.. listen to voices of the survivors.. now w Mohammad who was six years old at the time of the massacre.. Mohammad: the invasion changed my whole life.. Israel surrounded our camp.. a woman came to our house, said they were killing the women, the pregnant women.. we didn't believe her, the second day they came to our house.. they broke our windows, they broke the television, separated the women from the men.. the evacuated the women.. we heard the gunshots from the street.. they said we have to kill you here.. we kept walking.. we met an Isreali officer.. one man stepped on a landmine.. 20 years I feel like.. the sadness will continue.. they took my father, my sister was mutilated, they took the baby from her abdomen.. I wish they had killed us all together, they left me paralyzed.. my father used to say I want my boy to be a doctor.. now w Lexan from Chatila.. Lexan: my family are refugees from the Nakba of 1948.. on Sept 16, a Wednesday night.. the entire community was scared.. the PLO security withdrew on Sept 14.. they said we would be ok, but we were scared.. planes circling high.. Isreali tanks besieged Beruit.. the men.. debated what the Isreali would do.. we never thought there would be slaughters in the camp, like the Israeli would do.. the next morning the Israeli tanks surrounded the tanks.. the elders wanted to send a delegation with white flags.. there was no resistance left.. the young men refused to let the old men leave the camp.. in the end a delegation went.. we sat the the shelter door.. an old woman came and said the Phalangists were coming and killing everyong.. a woman said her sister was killed.. the news coming fast.. I didn't have anyone to protect me, isolated from the whole world.. my mother said we have to leave.. a man saw a heap of 16 bodies, saw a baby at his mother's nipple they were slaughtered.. we stayed there at night, couldnt' sleep, flares lit the sky.. Ahmad came back.. to find flour.. in the meanwhile the Israelis and the Phalangists had reached the alleys by our home.. we fled to the hospital.. my father was worried.. we left the camps.. Ahmad was murdered.. we returned to the camp four days after.. we didnt' go near the bodies.. the young boys did though.. my brother said look at how they slaughtered people.. about how I couldn't control my fear, we lived in a terrifying time.. there is no law.. who is the strong? America and Israel.. about taking Sharon to trial.. to pay for the lives of murdered children, women.. what was their crime? being Palestinian.. (report by Nora Aracot and Yun Suh)..
