The SHORTWAVE REPORT 9/6/02 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast upon notification. Germany, Netherlands, Spain, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 6) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:56) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired at 7pm PDST this Friday evening at KZYX/Z Philo CA and you MIGHT be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org/ (It hasn't worked recently)
There are several other streams that work quite well- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PDST) and on Monday at 9amPDST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR at Fri 10:30PM/ Sat 10:30AM PM/ Sun 10:30AM PDST
and the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Germany- At the UN Earth Summit in Johannesburg, targets for using renewable energy sources like solar and wind were written out under pressure from the US, to the grave disappointment of environmentally conscious people globally. Then a report on how Germany increased renewable energy sources by 150% in the past 3 years.
From Netherlands- At the Earth Summit, Colin Powell failed to convince anyone that the US places the environment above money. Russia announced plans to ratify the Kyoto Protocols on carbon emissions, joining Canada and China. A senate committee in Canada has urged the legalization of marijuana. Research in the Netherlands finds that the use of recreational drugs is on the rise. Zimbabwe President Mugabe spoke to the UN conference on the seizure of white owned farms.
From Spain- Russia has warned the US to not attack Iraq, stating that Iraq was not a credible threat. The suspended Spanish political party Batasuna says they will go ahead with protest marches next week. Columbia celebrated its first weekly Reward Day, where masked informants are given money for turning in rebels- live on television!
From Cuba- US negotiators at the Earth Summit got everything they wanted, according to environmentalists globally. Then a Viewpoint on National Security in the US, and the resulting world insecurity as current threats to attack Iraq bring global war within reach.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
