India & Pakistan meeting in Oakland

by Scott Johnson
Will there be a nuclear war in India & Pakistan?
Thurs. June 27, 7pm, Walden Pond Bookstore, 3316 Grand Ave. in Oakland.

There are one million troops at the border of India and Pakistan, tensions heat up in South Asia. Even worse, both of these countries have tested nuclear weapons as a part of a new nuclear arms race. If nuclear war occurred, as many as 15 million people could be killed very quickly. George W. Bush has been urging "restraint," but he is to blame for this crisis. It is his war in Afghanistan that has raised these tensions in the past few months. Also, Bush’s "with us, our with the terrorists" rhetoric has helped India justify it’s crackdown on Muslim secessionists in Kashmir. And even though Bush recently signed an arms agreement with Russia, he is building more nuclear devices. Bush is spending $1 billion every day on the military while workers get laid off and social programs are slashed. We need to build a movement against imperialism—where governments carve up the world and slaughter innocent people—to stop these two nuclear rivals from going to war and to stop the US war machine that causes these crises. Come to this meeting to learn more about the history of the region and the politics of the crisis.
