Labor Needs To Defend Our Democratic Rights!
On June 29, 2002, a Northern California one day conference is being organized to focus on the growing attack on our democratic rights and how to fight back. Bush's "War On Terrorism" has been used to justify major attacks on our labor and democratic rights. From longshoremen who are threatened under the "Maritime Security Act" with losing their jobs if they have been convicted of felonies to trade unionists under the "Patriot Act" who could lose their right to legal protection if they are immigrants, all workers are under threat. Teachers such as Palestinian American Sami Al Arian in Florida have been removed from their jobs while many Muslim and Palestinian American workers have been fired or harassed on the job. This includes Alia Atawneh and Hiam Yassine who were clerks at Macy's Valley Fair in the South Bay. It also includes the airport baggage screeners who have been threatened with losing their jobs if they are not US citizens.
At the same time, Mumia Abu-Jamal and nearly 2,000,000 others who are mostly Black and Brown are trapped in a prison system that is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Mumia Abu-Jamal like others has been fighting against a system that is stacked against poor people and the minorities. The labor movement must begin to educate and organize working people to defend our rights and discuss a strategy to do this.
