Thursday June 27, 2002 11:00 AM Port View Park, End of 7th St. Oakland On June 30, 2002 the contract for over 10,000 West Coast ILWU longshoremen expires and they maybe forced out on strike or locked out. The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) is seeking to eliminate the union hiring hall and has a host of other takeaways that would destroy the power of the union. Also, contracts for the Sailors Union Of the Pacific, Marine Engineers and Marine Cooks & Fireman expire at the APL Lines. It is important that all maritime and transportation workers come together in solidarity. The Bush government has already been urged by the shippers to block any strike action. Join with these maritime-transport workers to defend their unions and their rights! Date 11 AM June 27, Thursday Place: Port View Park At The End of 7th St. Oakland Speakers: Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. President International Brotherhood Of Teamsters Ken Riley, Pres ILA Local 1422, Charleston, S.C. John Bowers, President ILA Jim Spinosa, President ILWU Kees Marges, Secretary Dockers Section of ITF Judy Goff, Sec-Treas Alameda County Central Labor Council Richard Mead, President ILWU Local 10 From Jack Heyman, ILWU Local 10 jhook [at] jps.net ILWU's longshore contract expires at the end of June. The employer group, Pacific Maritime Association, is threatening to lock us out or alternately, we, 12,000 longshoremen, may be striking to defend our jobs, working conditions and benefits. If such a conflict ensues, ILWU will need support from all workers' organizations and political and community activists. Over the years, ILWU has been supportive of other workers' struggles around the world, South Africa, Liverpool, Australia, Chile, El Salvador, and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. We've given support to many trade unions here. Now we are appealing to you to roll up your sleeves and get involved in our struggle. ILWU Local 10 and other major longshore locals on the Coast are organizing "labor solidarity rallies" on Thursday June 27. Here in Oakland we are planning a mass rally of all portworkers, union and nonunion. There will be speakers from the Teamsters, ILA, railroad workers, ILWU and docker organizations from Europe. We need your help in organizing this event just 4 days before our contract expires. Join us at the first ILWU Strike Support Meeting 7 PM Tuesday June 18th at the Local 10 hall; 400 North Point near Fishermen's Wharf in San Francisco. For more info call me at 415-776-8105 or better yet just email me. In solidarity, Jack Heyman
