Worldwide Revolt against Bush's dictatorial powers
Across America and across the world, people and governments are standing up to the Bush Administration's creeping dictatorship.
From Portland to Detroit, from San Jose to Madrid, police agencies, governments, and ordinary people are beginning to say 'fuck you' to the Bush Administration's tyrannical methods for dealing with terrorism.
Europe refuses to extradite suspects: European governments will not extradite suspected terrorists unless the US guarantees a civilian trial.
""In Europe, we're very suspicious of special courts," said Marie Elisabeth Cartier, a professor of criminal justice at the University of Paris. "Everybody stands behind the U.S., and we understand that these events are exceptional. But we'd rather have normal procedure, one that is not military.""
Now before you go attacking these people as idiots, frogs, un-American, whatever, remember that Europe has FAR more experience with terrorism than the USA does, especially Spain, the country at issue here.
Portland, Oregon refuses Ashcroft's request for questioning: The city of Portland has refused to round up and question Middle-Easterners, citing Oregon laws against McCarthyism.
""The last thing I want is for Portland to have a reputation for not pulling its weight on the national terrorism issue," Kroeker said. "But worse than that, I don't want us to send a signal that when things are expedient, it's OK to break the law. It's a bit of a tension that we just have to absorb.""
Or, this gem:
""If they're inquiring about conduct, that's fine," Chaimov said. "But if they're inquiring about another person's thought process, they can't ask that.""
Terrorism is a heinous crime, to be sure. But then so is being a tyrant, or creating thought police, or attempting to subvert the American constitution to create a police state. Thankfully people all across America and across the world are waking up to the fact that "freedom vs security" is a false choice and that you can defend your security as well as your freedoms, and that no crisis is a good excuse for tearing up our constitution, which certain government officials swore to uphold...
