On Saturday, Nov. 17, reformers, activists and friends of democracy will
gather for a kickoff event for the campaign for instant runoff voting in San
Francisco. This kickoff will include special guest speakers followed by
precinct walking in the early afternoon. The day's events will conclude
with a party and fundraiser in the late afternoon.

Instant runoff voting was placed on the March 2002 ballot by a 10-1 vote of
the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Currently instant runoff voting in
San Francisco has been endorsed by California Assembly majority leader Kevin
Shelly, Board of Supervisors President Tom Ammiano, Supervisors Mark Leno,
Matt Gonzales and Tony Hall, Common Cause, Senior Action Network, Congress
of California Seniors, Sierra Club, California Nurses Association, Tenants
Union, California PIRG, Green Party and GCIU Local 4.

A group of citizens and endorsing organizations have come together to form
an organization called FairVoteSF with the purpose of educating the public
about instant runoff voting, and then campaigning for its passage on the
March 2002 ballot. Supporters of instant runoff voting are motivated by
several reasons, including improving a runoff system that led to nearly a 50
percent decline in voter turnout in December 2000; cost-savings to taxpayers
and the city budget of approximately $1.5 million per election cycle, since
we won't have to pay for a second election; and cost-savings to candidates,
who won't have to raise money for a second election which serves to
undermine campaign finance reform. Instant runoff voting will ensure
majority rule, but do it all in one vote.

The schedule for the campaign kickoff on Nov. 17 is as follows:

10 am -- gather for coffee and doughnuts

10:15 am -- educational presentation and Q&A about how instant runoff
voting works, and why it will be good for San Francisco

11:15 am -- CAMPAIGN KICKOFF, with special guest speakers.

12 noon to 3 pm -- precinct walking

4:00 pm -- party and fundraiser (location to be announced).

Please plan on coming to some or all of the day's events, and help initiate
this exciting and historic campaign to enact instant runoff voting in San
Francisco.

Sincerely,

Steven Hill
