by Dan Mattson ( handyman [at] california.com )

This 17 minute video highlights the entire 2.5 hour CD action at the IES incinerator on 9/5/01. This was prompted by IES abrubtly ended negotians for a phased shutdown after activists learned they had been lying about the state requiring certain medical waste be burned. According to KPFA news IES disputes this.

IES Spoke Says Some Burning Still Mandated
by Ed Rippy
Saturday Sep 8th, 2001 11:03 AM
I did the KPFA story, and yes, their spoke (Jay Silverberg of some law firm or other) said "the law [requiring incineration] is still on the books." IES themselves wouldn't talk to me & referred me to Silverberg (they routinely do this when I ask them for comment). He did hem & haw a bit, saying that *technically* the law may no longer be in effect (?) but that in substance it was. Interestingly, he cited Ca. Dept. of Health Svcs (DHS) among others as saying that incineration remains the safest method in some cases. Bradley Angel (GreenAction) had cited a DHS official as saying that there's no explicit legal mandate for incineration. Under deadline, I wasn't able to pursue the issue. If I get a chance I'll track down the DHS guy & get the exact scoop.
