Four Million Dying

by David Hanks/Global Exchange (david [at] globalexchange.org)
Kathy Labriola (holding sign) is a counselor and nurse in Berkeley who works primarily with people with AIDS . She joined the international day of protest against pharmaceutical companies because she's, "very ´´ distressed that people in South Africa are not getting access the drugs that are keeping my patients alive for many years -- when they would have otherwise died." The pharmaceutical corporations (which are suing the South African Government for patent infringement) are trying to prevent low-cost, generic drugs from being distributed to people who cannot afford to pay full price.
