Gonzales and Mueller want isps to spy on customers

by Todd Anderson
A short article about the recent Gonzales, and Mueller proposal for
isps to record two years of web surfing records for all American
citizens.

The latest proposal to increase domestic spying by Attorney General Gonzales, and FBI Director Robert Mueller calls for isps to maintain two years of records on internet web surfing. The data would ostensibly be to combat terrorism, and increase the crackdown on child porn. However, the recent abuses by the NSA,
AT&T, and other government agencies indicate that the proposal is in fact a method of turning isps into spy stations.

There are already enough laws on the books that allow for the FBI to pursue terrorists, and child pornographers when they have a warrant, and some sort of reason to monitor the internet activities of a child porn ring, or a group of terrorists. The recent abuses
by the NSA, and AT&T tend to indicate that the proposal would lead to the FBI playing the role of some sort of internet policeman, which would probably be abused to monitor groups who are against the war in Iraq, or other persons who do not support the neocon worldview.

Gonzales has already admitted that the NSA has been reading the email of US citizens that are not terrorists, or involved in other crimes. CNET News.com February 6, 2006 found out that the NSA has already illegally read the emails of American citizens that
are not under suspicion of terrorist affiliations.

The proposal to legislate regulations for isps to spy on customers for two years needs to be scrapped right now. The idea that the internet should become a tool for both NSA, and FBI spying sounds a lot like the Chinese authoritarian model for creating an
Orwellian police state. The Gonzales proposal to turn isps into spy labs for the FBI, and the NSA is a danger to the First Amendment, and is a blatant attempt to create the apparatus for an authoritarian internet structure that would destroy personal freedom in the US.

The recent abuses by the NSA of internet traffic, email, and the warrantless wiretapping of ordinary Americans needs to stop now. The Gonzales internet spy proposals would
Turn the US into something similar to the dystopia recently featured in the move V for Vendetta. As a result, the US Congress should reject the latest Gonzales proposal to turn isps into spy stations for the FBI, and the NSA.
