There's just ONE problem with this. NONE of these fruit varieties will grow in Cascadia without the aid of climate control. (ie. a greenhouse)

Apparently, this list came in from the Bay Area, but even there, only Avocados would stand much of a chance.

For Cascadia we would want to replace these with apples, pears, peaches, cherries, plums and possibly a few others like figs which can grow in at least Southern Cascadia. It would also be far better to root cuttings from established native heirloom varieties and transplant the mini-saplings oopposed to just dropping seed here and there. Not only is the seed difficult to start, but the origin of most of the fruit you will find in stores these days is very questionable and this is not the sort of germplasm that I for one would like to see spread around into Cascadia's enviornment.

   This is a list of links to instructions on how to grow fruit trees
from the seeds of their fruits, as you find in the grocery stores.
Share as you will.  If people know how to do these things then they
will do them.  YOU CAN PLANT TREES ANYWHERE.  NOT JUST YOUR OWN YARD.
Imagine a whole country filled with fruit trees!  There is a vacant lot
near your house.  Find it, and plant!  There is an empty stretch near
the road, plant!  If your favorite plant isn't on the list, then look
it up on the internet.  And, then, plant!  =)

climate as a two-way street.
Full report available at this URL: http://dieoff.org/page129.htm
Here's some excerpts fromthe Executive Summary:
------------------------------------------------------------
Drawing on the latest research on forest ecology, the impacts of
recent climate change, and studies on projected future climate
change, this report shows that between 50 and 90 percent of the
existing boreal forests are likely to disappear as a result of a
doubling of atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gases.
While it is possible that the boreal forest could expand into the
frozen tundra as temperatures increase, such an expansion would
likely be delayed by slow tree migration rates and the adverse
effects of increased ultraviolet radiation on trees from ozone
depletion.
Even in the long term, the boreal forest is not expected to expand
enough to compensate for the deterioration in the southern part of
the forest.

"Any so-called enviromental group that skirts the critical issue of OVERPOPULATION and that alleges to care about the ultimate future of our planet's biosphere, should be exposed as hypocritical"

lively debate that has taken place around this question of overpopulation since the 70s. On one hand, we have those who hope to control population growth through state intervention — Garrett Hardin, author of "The Tragedy of the Commons" is a famous proponent. Many on this side of the debate applaud the Chinese state, which sharply limits reproduction.

On the other side, you have anarchists, libertarian socialists and some liberals who point out that the driving force behind population growth is the unstable nature of the capitalist system and the uneven distribution of the benefits of modern life. A solution that values individual liberties and the rights of women will focus not on the state's power to restrict reproduction, but on the spread of educational opportunities to women, the re-distribution of wealth, and the ready availability of birth control.

Here's a good page on the subject:

# 5/19: SF Google Free WiFi hearing - Privacy/Digital Divide issues (downtown / civic / van ness)

The main topics will be Privacy and Digital Inclusion, but you can speak about anything regarding the WiFi initiative

Privacy - includes library-like privacy for people who are undocumented migrant workers, those without credit cards (required for usage), members of unpopular political groups.

Digital Inclusion - includes training and computers for those who need it, coverage that meets the RFP requirements of 95% outdoor / 90% indoor and at real-world bandwidth speeds (not something slightly over dial-up currently offered).

SF City Hall - Room 263, 2-5PM, agenda is here:
http://www.sfgov.org/site/lafco_page.asp?id=38962

If you cannot attend in person - you may watch cable channel (26 or 78) or live video streaming at http://sfgov.org/site/sfgtv_index.asp?id=11463 (select SFGTV or SFGTV2)

ACLU, EFF and EPIC have sent four letters to San Francisco - advocating for Municipal WiFi with privacy protections - I believe that they have received no response from the city and it appears that the RFP and other aspects of the TechConnect initiative have largely not addressed the issues they have persistently raised.

# This Thursday May 18th, the Vegas SF crew (Grant, David, Dan, Nate, Lance,
Luke, Jeremy) will be hosting a Yoga Party.
Every week we will feature different yoga instructors offering
varying perspectives and styles of yoga. The yoga class
will be followed by tea and light snacks (you are encouraged to bring
snacks/tea to share).

THIS WEEKS FEATURE:
Self-Awakening Partner and Acro Yoga with Will Edmonson & Jenna dAnna

Will's yoga can be described as partner yoga, acro yoga, and gravity
massage. We step out of the contemporary isolation of asana, and step into
the intimacy of community and connection that brings us out of our comfort
zone, and into the healing space of trust. We ultimately find that we've
gone deeper into ourselves, discovered an ease and openness with others in
the room, and shared a very special silent experience with our partner.

Jenna d'Anna specializes in Self-Awakening Yoga, which creates an
expansion of consciousness, concentration and relaxation by accessing the
wisdom of your own body and mind. Through movement inquiries and advanced
breathing techniques, Self-Awakening Yoga creates a sense of flow, harmony
and overall integration.

Here is an opportunity to play and explore this possibility of opening in
a safe space of movement, touch, and mutual support, all in the context of
yoga.

~~~~~~~~
WHEN: Thursday May 18th from 7:00 to 8:30pm (please arrive early and
leave time to find parking, doors open at 6:30).
...If you can make this meeting tonight it would really help. Those
supporting the ban will be out in force.
Two years ago you could have a fire anywhere on Ocean Beach, the BAN
group won a victory and there is only a mile long strip of Ocean Beach
where you can still have a fire.
If they win tonight there will be not be any beach in San Francisco
where you can have a beach bonfire.
That would be a sad thing indeed.
I grew up in Florida and we were NEVER allowed to have a fire on the
beach. I always heard how cool California was, because you could have a
bonfire and bring your dogs to the beach.
Seems that the coolness is about to be lost. How ironic it's in Burning
Man's back yard.
Please pass this on to anyone you know. The bigger the group the
better.
Cheers, Craig
# SF Google Free WiFi City Hearing - Privacy and Digital Div.
Friday, May 19th 1:00pm - 3:00pm free
The main topics will be Privacy and Digital Inclusion, but you can
speak about anything regarding the WiFi initiative
Privacy - includes library-like privacy for people who are
undocumented migrant workers, those without credit cards (required
for usage), members of unpopular political groups.
Digital Inclusion - includes training and computers for those who
need it, coverage that meets the RFP requirements of 95% outdoor /
90% indoor and at real-world bandwidth speeds (not something slightly
over dial-up currently offered).
Agenda is here:
http://www.sfgov.org/site/lafco_page.asp?id=38962
If you cannot attend in person - you may watch cable channel (26 or
78) or live video streaming at
http://sfgov.org/site/sfgtv_index.asp?id=11463 (select SFGTV or SFGTV2)
There will be an IRC online chatroom setup at:
ernesto.indymedia.org
chatroom #techconnect
you can use the chat client here:
http://chat.indymedia.org/
ACLU, EFF and EPIC have sent four letters to San Francisco -
advocating for Municipal WiFi with privacy protections - I believe
that they have received no response from the city and it appears that
the RFP and other aspects of the TechConnect initiative have largely
not addressed the issues they have persistently raised.
# No Walls No Laws Sunday, May 21 all day free
basically it is a spread the word event- any artist is invited to bring stuff to the panhandle at Staynan street and set it up, hang out for as long as they want and then take it down- There are no restrictions, no fees, no reason not to come and hang out and see a variety of cool art- (the artists should keep in mind that there are no walls so they will need to think about how they are going to set up their work) WHy should artists need a gallery to show there work to the public....artists are sensitive beings and what they express can be important....i don't think art should be regulated by the galleries- so lets have a show
# Please pass on to your community
Please Join the California Nurses Association…..
Protest Dick Cheney’s Corruption of Our Political Process
And Rally for CNA’s November, 2006 statewide ballot initiative for Clean Money Elections in California.
Monday, May 22 11:00 AM Sacramento Hyatt—1209 J St.
Cheney will be in Sacramento raising money for Congressman John Doolittle—who is caught up in the “Jack Abramoff” scandal. Doolittle accepted skyboxes at sporting events from Abramoff, failed to report them, and did favors for Abramoff’s casino and other clients. Doolittle’s wife Julie receives a 15% commission on his fundraising, and Doolittle’s Congressional Chief of Staff Rich Robinson moonlights on his campaign. With Abramoff in custody, Cheney is now lending a hand to Doolittle, and helping his corporate friends buy a little more influence.
*Could there be any better argument for the California Nurses Association’s upcoming Clean Money Elections initiative? Californians are tired of the corruption and the cash register politics. Clean Money Elections, also known as public financing of campaigns, allow candidates to run for office without taking huge donations from lobbyists and corporations—and without owing them favors.*
*Isn’t it time we cleaned up our political system?*
*Come join the nurses and tell Dick Cheney we’ve had enough!*
We will be meeting on Sunday, May 21st @ 1pm at Skates on Haight (@ Stanyan) to rent roller skates. If the idea of skating seems daunting, please feel free to bring a bike, big wheel, or whatever floats your furry boat!
Also, we will be picnic'ing. Please bring your favorite picnic-style food and drinks. I will be searching for a couple little red wagons to tote our goodies behind us as we skate.
Feel free to bring a guest or two or three. The more freaks, the merrier! -StarLight
# Electile Dysfuntion: Take Back Your Right to Vote
Wed May 24 7:30 pm $5 donations accepted
ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION: TAKE BACK YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE
Presented by Gypsy
This film explores the reasons why elections have spiraled into their
current disastrous state and what you can do to reclaim your vote and
to promote changes to rid our country of vote fraud. See what parts
the media, corporations, judges, and the political parties play in
the election game and actions you can take to encourage these folks
to work in the interests of the American people and democracy instead
of self-interest, corruption, and greed. The film ends with a plea
for our lawmakers to create a Constitutional Amendment guaranteeing
the right to vote for every citizen, guaranteeing that their Vote be
COUNTED, and for those that would defraud any voter be held legally
accountable. You can help. http://www.electiledysfunctionmovie.com
Before and after the film, everyone's invited to indulge in our
# The End of Suburbia Thu May 25 7:00pm-9:30pm Free.
THE END OF SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American
Dream.
Viewers say it best--
"This information is quite shocking. I think many people who thought
they had sufficient information concerning the energy crisis will be
left in a rethinking mode". - Jim, California
"The End of Suburbia is a perfect tool for introducing people to peak
oil. Just enough humor to sugarcoat the bitter pill". - Jason,
California
"...it's one of the most important docs in recent years". - Anthony
Lappe, Guerrilla News Network.
SYNOPSIS: Since World War II, North Americans have invested much of
their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space,
affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of
suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the
suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.
Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.
But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to
emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. The End of
Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the
planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels
begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline
of fossil fuels are upon us now.
What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket
in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to
the collapse of their dream? And what can be done NOW, individually
and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?
Commencing at 7:00pm for socializing at Varnish's beer/wine/sake bar,
gallery viewing, then film.
# Critical Mass - Friday 5/26 6pm Justin Herman Plaza: Market @ Embarcadero
http://critical-mass.org Bring bicycle, helmet, light, costume, music...
Maybe we can encourage the people who block cross traffic to:
wait until the mass arives at that intersection, so as to offend as few drivers as possible.
Definitely hold up / wait before blocking major intersections. BECAUSE
It would be nice to be visible to as many pedestrians and motorists as possible while
offending/ delaying as few motorists as possible.
Pissing them off is just gonna make them anti-bike.
