US hostage killed in Iraq

by reposts
A dead body found in Iraq has been identified as that of missing US hostage Tom Fox, the US State Department has said.

Fox, a Christian peace activist, was abducted along with three colleagues in late 2005.

Announcing the discovery, the State Department said it had no information on the condition of the other three hostages.

"The State Department continues to call for the unconditional release of all other hostages" in Iraq," spokesman Noel Clay said.

Fox's family has been notified, he said, and "our heartfelt condolences go out to them".

Clay did not give any details as to the cause of death, but reports quoting an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said the body showed signs of beating on its back and had been shot.

Iraqi police found the victim in the al-Mansur neighbourhood of Baghdad at around 5pm local time on Thursday, the official added.

Recognising that they had found a Westerner, the police patrol contacted US forces who took charge of the body.

Separately a witness quoted by the AFP new agency described how the body of a thin man, wearing a track suit, was found.

The body had been wrapped in a blanket inside a plastic bag and placed on a garbage dump, the witness said.

US hostage killed in Iraq

An American who was among four Christian activists kidnapped last year in Iraq has been killed, the US state department said today.

The FBI verified that a body found in Iraq on Friday morning was that of Tom Fox, 54, who was seized together with Briton Norman Kember and Canadians James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden. The four men were travelling with Canadian-based peace group Christian Peacemaker Teams.

"The family has been notified and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family," Noel Clay, a spokesman for the US state department, said.

On Tuesday, al-Jazeera television showed footage of the three other activists purportedly appealing to their governments to secure their release.

US hostage kidnapped with Kember is found killed

An American hostage has been killed in Iraq. Tom Fox was kidnapped last year along with the British peace activist Norman Kember.

There is no new information on Mr Kember or the two Canadians taken at the same time.

The FBI verified that a body found in Iraq yesterday morning was that of Tom Fox, 54, spokesman Noel Clay said. He said he had no information on the other three hostages.

Clay said he did not know how Fox was killed but said additional forensics will be done in the United States. The US Embassy in Baghdad is investigating, he said.

"The State Department continues to call for the unconditional release of all other hostages" in Iraq, the spokesman said.

Fox's organization, Christian Peacemaker Teams, said :"We mourn the loss of Tom Fox, who combined a lightness of spirit, a firm opposition to all oppression, and the recognition of God in everyone."

Christian Peacemaker co-directors Doug Pritchard and Carol Rose said in a statement, "In response to Tom's passing, we ask that everyone set aside inclinations to vilify or demonize others, no matter what they have done."

"This guy was not after martyrdom by any means," said Paul Slattery, a member of the McLean, Virginia-based Langley Hill Friends Meeting that Fox, a Quaker, also attended. "He actually believed in his heart that he would better them by his conviction and his beliefs and his skills, and I think largely succeeded.

"What he leaves behind is a tremendous challenge for the rest of us and a guiding force."

Fox was the one American among four Christian Peacemaker activists kidnapped last year in Iraq.
