Friedan re-awakened U.S. feminism, in 1963

by ImpeachCheneyFirst (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
With her 1963 book, progressive Betty Friedan sparked a
revival of dormant U.S. femniism.
BETTY FRIEDAN,
mother of 1960s feminist renewal,
dies at 85:

[ Comment by 1960s member of NOW:]

When progressive Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique in 1963,
she sparked a revival of the U.S. feminist movement
(which had almost disappeared after U.S. women won national suffrage, circa 1920).
Soon she co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW).

But her new comrades soon learned that a writer isn't thereby an effective leader.
A writer can work effectively on her own, as a lone wolf; but a leader needs social skills.
Eventually NOW shoved its founder to the sidelines.

Meanwhile, the mass media preferred to focus public attention on
other feminist writers and activists --
especially those perceived as younger, prettier, sexier, more radical, etc.

Of course, Friedan isn't the only movement founder to be shoved aside by rivals.
The same thing happened to leftist founders (1950) of the queer Mattachine Society.

Today, let's forget her years of political exile,
and remember her as she was in 1963- 66,
launching the "second wave" of feminism.
